Class Rules

  • Please set your microphone to ‘push-to-talk’ (PTT) or mute in Mumble
  • Feel free to ask questions in:
    • “Class (EUni)” or in the Class Question channel in Discord during or after class. Remember to preface your question with a “Q” so they are easier to see. (i.e.: “Q” Why does EVE use meters instead of feet?)
    • On Mumble whenever there are open comms (usually at the end of class during Q&A).
    • Stay safe during class (docked-up is preferred).

Why Mine?

  • It takes ore to build everything in EvE. This is where the food chain in EVE begins. Without ore nothing gets built. There is always a demand.
  • "Easy” ISK per hour
    • Ore is easy to find (it’s everywhere), easy to extract
    • Pretty low risk (not no risk) – decent reward
  • The downside is mining is rarely exciting and it’s time consuming.

Types of Mining

  • Solo Mining
  • Fleet Mining (Compression is generally available in fleets)
    • BYOC (Bring Your Own Can)
      • You keep what you mine
      • Boosts/Compression generally available
      • Can be formal or impromptu
    • Shared Can
      • The FC keeps the ore and you get paid based on time you mine, not how much you mine
      • Organized, watch the forum, event calendar and #ping-mining in Discord
      • Boosts/Compression are available

Ores

  • What can the Venture and Pioneer mine? Ore (Asteroid & Moon) and Gas only.
  • Ore is what you mine. Refine the ore and you get minerals, that’s where the ISK is.
  • The value is in the ‘units’ of ore mined not the volume.
  • Asteroids/Ore
    • Different Empires, different ores
      • Gallente & Minmatar space – Veldspar, Plagioclase, Scordite
      • Amarr space – Veldspar, Pyroxeres, Scordite
      • Caldari space – Veldspar, Plagioclase, Pyroxeres, Scordite

Ores

  • Ore ‘unit’ size and ore grade ( https://ore.cerlestes.de/ore )
    • Each ore type has a physical ‘unit’ size and three ‘grades’
      • Veldspar (the most common ore) unit size=0.1m3 (contains Tritanium)
        • Veldspar = Base ore
        • Veldspar Grade II = +5% Tritanium content
        • Veldspar Grade III = +10% Tritanium content
  • You are paid by the ‘units’ of ore/mineral (not the volume) and the ‘grade’ influences the unit price

What, When and Where to Mine

  • What to mine?
    • For the Newbro; Veldspar Grades I, II, and III
      • Takes up less hold space, smallest unit size so more ISK per hold.
      • Has the best return per unit
      • https://ore.cerlestes.de/ore
  • When not to mine.
    • Don’t mine when:
      • If there are Gankers in or on the way to the system or a large number of baddies or a lot of recent kills in system
      • If there is a Pirate Stronghold in system ( https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Stronghold )
      • Use your best judgment

What, When and Where to mine

  • Where to mine

    • Mine where the ore you're looking for is at ( https://evemaps.dotlan.net/system/Stacmon )

    • Mine in dead-end systems. Dead-end systems tend to be safer and have more 5% and 10% ore.

    • Lower security = more quality asteroids and belts.

    • Avoid super busy systems ( like Stacmon )*

    • Avoid known ganker systems ( like Stacmon )*

    • Systems can be mined out or over-mined ( like Stacmon )*

What, When and Where to mine

  • Scan your target!

    • Filter what you want: value, volume or distance.
    • Alt+Click will show you the target and you can check if there are already 2 beams on it (Don’t touch other players food!)
    • Ctrl+Click will target what you want, and you can start munching those tasty rocks!
    • You need to have equipped the module “Mining Survey Chipset” to be able to see the details of each rock.

What, When, and Where to mine

  • Scan your target!
    • When scanning down your asteroid belt the value of the ore will be color-coded from Blue to Gold. Blue being the lower value and gold being the higher value ore to focus. as shown in the photo.

What do the numbers mean?

  • When mining a lot of numbers can pop up on your HUD and can be a few different colors. We will cover the need to knows right now and cover the more advanced options later.
    • White - Basic Units Gathered
    • Yellow - Critical Yield (Advanced topic)
    • Red - Residue
  • Residue can be simply explained as WASTED ORE. Residue takes away from the initial amount of rock you are mining.
    • Example 1: A rock contains 100 units, you mined 10 with a residue of 0 so the rock now has 90 units left.
    • Example 2: A rock contains 100 units, you mined 10 with a residue of 10 so the rock now has 80 units left.
  • Always look at the yield/residue ratio and see what works for you! Speed or Overall amount of ore.

I’ve got a hold full of ore, now what?

  • Options for your ore

    • Sell the raw ore on the open market. Lowest profit option for newbros.

    • Sell ore to E-Uni Buyback service. You are paid mineral not ore value.

( https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Buyback ) ( https://ore.cerlestes.de/ore )

    • Refine it and keep or sell the minerals

      • E-Uni Perfect Refine List (https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Perfect_Refine_List ). Usually a 10,000 ISK for contracting minerals back to you + costs.

      • Refine it yourself. Not a good option unless you have excellent refine skills.

    • Stockpile for later

I’ve got a hold full of ore, now what?

  • When mining it’s important to know the stations and structures nearby! Having this knowledge can save you time and time is ISK.
  • Once your hold is full you have a couple options:
    • Dock up in the nearest NPC station to drop off your ore.
    • Dock in the nearest player structure and utilize compression for easier moving after your session.
  • To find structures nearby simply access your NEOCOM menu, go to UTILITIES, STRUCTURE BROWSER, select SERVICE FILTER, and locate a REPROCESSING PLANT. You’ll learn more about Compression and other services later on!
