A neural network is a group of computers linked together to mimic the human brain.

10 of 50

A large language model is a type of artificial intelligence that is able to analyze and process language. This language processing allows it to read and create text. It’s how generative AI generates things!

An algorithm is a step-by-step process for solving a problem.

What term from the video does this image remind you of?

12 of 50

Basically, LLMs learn by reading a lot of content. From this content, they’re able to pick up patterns in how language is used. Rules from an algorithm and feedback from humans help LLMs figure out these patterns.

Using these patterns, LLMs make really good guesses about what words will go with one another. In this way, LLMs don’t actually understand what they’re saying. They’re just choosing words that might make sense. Because of this, it’s important to double-check that the things an LLM is saying are true!

Training an LLM

13 of 50

Now that you’ve learned about how large language models, the systems that run generative AI tools, work, what do you think it means that “generative AI is only as good as the data it’s trained on?”

What is AI Literacy?

AI literacy includes the knowledge and skills that enable humans to critically understand, use, and evaluate AI systems and tools to safely and ethically participate in an increasingly digital world.

The knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with how artificial intelligence works, including its principles, concepts, and applications, as well as how to use artificial intelligence, such as its limitations, implications, and ethical considerations.

Investigating: Students are being introduced to the basic concepts of AI and its potential applications in a handful of classes. They are developing an awareness of ethical considerations related to AI use but have a limited understanding of responsible practice.

Implementing: Students engage with AI technologies in a variety of classes, demonstrating growing competence. They have explored the ethical implications of AI and have begun to collaborate on projects emphasizing the responsible and ethical application of AI tools. Evidence of student use/ proficiency is limited.

Innovating:

Most students utilize AI to support their learning goals, critically assessing AI’s societal impact, including biases, privacy concerns, and fairness issues, while making informed judgments about the authenticity and origin of content. Evidence of use/proficiency is well documented.
