Overview – A challenging year

With traditional avenues of income closed to us, we quickly pivoted to income generation via donations and grant fundraising.
This, along with the continued support of our core funders, enabled us to continue to provide services and to put on events.
We managed to maintain a relatively high amount of money in reserves to cover three months running costs and redundancy obligations.
John Speed of JS2 Ltd, our Independent Examiner, had no concerns about the way we have kept our accounting records in respect of the relevant Acts and Regulations

2020/21 was a challenging year for all of us. For Abney Park, one of our big challenges was how could we continue to operate and serve the public when traditional avenues of income such as theatre, fayres, events, retail and hires were not possible during the pandemic.

This led to some new thinking in the areas of income generation as well as delivery. In terms of income generation, we started to fundraise online and were very grateful to receive more than £20,000 of donations over the financial year.

We also redoubled our efforts to raise funds from grant giving bodies and were successful in receiving emergency grants from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Heritage England. We also continued to enjoy support from the London Borough of Hackney and the Commonwealth War Graves commission.

As you’ve heard from Tom and others, 2020/21 has, against expectations, turned out to be a positive one for Abney.

We’ve also managed to maintain good reserves and our Independent Examiner has no concerns about our bookkeeping or about any of our incomings and outgoings, and has stated that we are complying with the relevant Acts and Regulations
