FISH RAIN CAUSES

GLOBAL WARMING

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING ? EXPLAIN THE CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING ?

3 of 14

GLOBAL WARMING :

  • CHANGE IS THE LAW OF NATURE

  • WE WITNESSED CLIMATE CHANGE .

  • A NUMBER OF GEOLOGICAL EVIDENCES SUGGEST THAT ONCE UPON A TIME , LARGE PART OF THE EARTH WAS UNDER ICE COVER

Reasons for global warming

  • Besides the natural causes , human activities such as large scale industrialization and presence of polluting gas in the atmosphere are also important factors responsible for global warming.

Greenhouse effect

  • Carbon dioxide produced by human activities is a major source of concern .

Burning of fossil fuel , other gases like methane, chlorofluorocarbons, and nitrous oxide

impact

Significant increase in the temperature of world

gGreen house gases

TheThese gases are better absorbers of long wave radiations than carbon enhancing the greenhouse effect.

Global warming :

  • In past 150 years, the mean annual surface temperature has increased.

  • It is projected that by the year 2100 global temperature will increase by about 2c,

  • Rise in sea level : Due to melting of glaciers and sea ice .

  • Increase the incidence of annual flooding.
  • Climate change would promote insect borne diseases like malaria.
  • Lead to shift in climatic boundaries.
  • Agricultural pattern would shift and human population as well as the ecosystem would experience change

impact

According to the current prediction, on an average , the sea level will rise 48 cm by the end of twenty first century.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT :

  • The gases which are transparent to solar radiation but retain the partiality reflect back long wave heat radiation are called Greenhouse Gases ( GHGs)

  • greenhouse effect in keeping the earth warm

GREENHOUSE

Greenhouse Effect :

  • Building made of glass for growing or sheltering the delicate plants is called greenhouse
  • The glass walls of greenhouse allow sun rays to pass through to the
  • Reflected back infrared ray are not allowed to escape.
  • CO2 and water vapour in greenhouse trap the heat make the house warmer , than outside air
  • Atmosphere cover around the Earth ,act similar to the glass walls of a greenhouse.
  • Air cover allows solar radiations to pass through it to the Earth’s surface.
  • Cover prevents long infrared radiations to escape into the space.
  • CO2,Methane(CH4),Ozone(O3),Nitrogen oxide(N2O)and Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are greenhouse gases (GHGs).

Greenhouse Gases:

  • Carbon Dioxide :
  • Atmospheric concentration was 280ppm in 1750 , 368 ppm in 2000,380 ppm in 2007, 400 ppm in 2013 and 480 ppm in 2018
  • Deforestation.
  • Combustion of fossil fuels.
  • 33% of Indian land was covered by forest in the beginning of 20th century . It was reduce by 19.4% by the end of this century.

  • Methane :
  • Incomplete decomposition mostly by anaerobic methanogens.
  • Flooded paddy fields, marshes and cattle.

  • Chlorofluorocarbon :
      • They are synthetic gaseous compounds of carbon and halogen which are odourless , non-toxic , non inflammable, chemically inert propellants.
      • Used in aerosol cans and jet fuel , refrigerants in air conditioners and refrigerants ,production of industrial solvents, fire extinguishers and plastic foams

                  • Nitrous Oxide :
      • Produced by he combustion of nitrogen rich fuels, live stocks , wastes, breakdown of nitrogen fertilizers in soil, nitrate contaminated water, nylon production and some other industrial processes.

EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING:

  • It is believed that increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases has resulted in the rise of atmospheric temperature, some 2.5c since in industrial revolution and 0.6c in the twentyieth century , mostly during its last three decades.

  1. Effect on atmosphere
  2. Effect on weather and climate
  3. Change in sea levels
  4. Effect on range of species
  5. Food production
