Opportunity overviewSetting the stage

What we do

Provide entertainment & party supplies for private events using inflatable rentals as the primary service offering.

How we do it

By purchasing inflatables at bargain prices and renting them to clients at prices that deliver healthy margins while making consideration of delivery, setup, maintenance, equipment cost & it's yearly devaluation

Why we’re doing it

Many event planners have short term needs for party inflatables, but don’t want to be inconvenienced by owning them outright. Additionally, many don’t have room to store them. As-needed rentals are their most viable option.

It’s important to understand the following: For most people, renting an inflatable on an as-needed basis is almost always a more logical decision then owning outright.

Researching, purchasing, storing and maintaining a quality inflatable is not something that most people should be troubled with. There’s also safety & insurance considerations that could keep businesses from managing this type of activity all together.

Paying a premium to rent an inflatable is worth any possible inconvenience that could come from owning it outright.

Opportunity cost

02

9 of 42

Opportunity cost: The value of one alternative relative to the value of the next best alternative.

This cost is not always financial. It makes consideration of market competition, penetrability, startup costs, time to validate the idea, and more.

At Arena, we don’t explore high opportunity cost ventures; inflatable party equipment rentals aren’t one of them.

Low startup cost

Negligible operating costs

Unconventional

Inflatable party equipment rental business plan

The inflatable party equipment rental business is unconventional and it’s low startup costs make it an opportunity worth considering. Renting inflatables involve negligible labor & operating costs, since the correct inflatable requires little-to-no maintenance, and there aren’t large staffing needs. Inflatable repair expertise is not required, since maintenance can be outsourced to a third party.

Pairing inflatable rentals with the varying cross-sell opportunities available make this a penetrable opportunity ripe for disruption. Despite it’s “boring” nature, our mouths water at the thought of exploring this idea.

Plan, Do, Check, Act: Also known as the PDCA cycle, this project management framework helps businesses drive continuous improvement across their products & services.

We strongly recommend that you pair our product plan with the PDCA framework in your workstreams to help identify efficiencies in the opportunity as they arise.

Good artist copy, great artists steal.Don’t reinvent the wheel.Copy your competition’s homework (see bonus section) by listing the exact inflatables & services they have available in their inventory.

15 of 42

Sell before you build.Low on capital? Pre-sell.List inflatables first; only purchasing them once you see what would rent most frequently.

16 of 42

Sourcing equipment

Keep it simple. Use Facebook marketplace to source inflatables that you need. To begin your fleet, you don’t need brand new equipment.

The cheaper you can acquire inflatables, the better return you can yield during it’s rental history (more on this later).

That said, don’t focus on purchasing cheap. Instead, focus on value. Some due diligence will be needed during the purchasing process. Yes, you will need to haggle for better prices.

17 of 42

Startup costs: $1,100

It’s in our estimation that startup costs for this business are in the $1,100 range.

This includes both your initial bounce house and marketing costs slated to be discussed shortly. This cost does not make consideration of your transportation needs.

To start this business, borrow a truck or trailer. If you can’t do that, put a hitch cargo carrier on your car.

Instructions are self-explanatory for event inflatable rentals.01. Source quality inflatables at bargain prices.02. Find potential customers.03. Rent at the highest reasonable price. You can measure “reasonable” by looking at your inflatable occupancy rate. Healthy occupancy rate = healthy rental rates.

19 of 42

Occupancy rate

There isn't much information related to inflatable rental occupancy rate recommendations. That said, given our low operating & labor costs, it's appropriate to aim for 50% or above.

20 of 42

Dollar utilization rate

Target a 60-70% dollar utilization rate for your fleet of inflatables. Meaning that after a year, each inflatable should earn you 60-70% of it's total acquisition cost.

Dollar utilization rate = annual rental revenue divided by the original cost of the rental purchase.
