TMR (Total Material Requirement)

  • The movement of water (rivers, seawater) and gases (air), as well as energy and material inputs from sunlight, are not considered. However, the weight of the food itself, including water content, is considered. Therefore, for food materials obtained from naturally growing plants, the TMR is the weight of the material itself.
  • The production of crops requires soil (land), but if production activities are carried out in one location for multiple years, the total production over the entire period is used for allocation. The same applies to topsoil or other soil used in greenhouses.
  • Photosynthesis by sunlight, fermentation by microorganisms, intake of naturally occurring nutrients, and the foraging of wild plants or animal plankton supplied by the normal ecosystem for livestock and seafood are not considered. In contrast, if there are artificial inputs such as fuel, fertilizers, pesticides, and artificial feed, TMR associated with their entire production chain is fully accounted for.

  • TMR related to materials used over a long period, such as plastic greenhouses, fishing gear, machinery, and ships, is allocated based on the total production until the end of the material’s or product’s useful life.

  • The inputs related to transportation, packaging, processing, and disposal, as well as the treatment of by-products, are defined by the system boundary.
  • The functional unit can be arbitrarily set as weight, calories, nutrients, etc., depending on the purpose of the evaluation. TMR per functional unit is defined as the food specific TMR.
