Key Reflections - College and Academic Data

Reflection #1-

I am proud of our graduating class of 2023 at Lighthouse HS, as our recent data builds strong momentum for LCPS’s College and Career Programming under Josh Weintraub at our two high schools.

At this point in the College Acceptance season, 86% of our seniors at Lighthouse have received acceptances from 4 year colleges and universities!

  • Highlights: this cohort hit some very strong data targets we havent seen:
    • ~30% accepted at UC system schools, Over 20 students got into these schools, including a record 5 at UCLA
    • Our first Ivy League acceptance to Dartmouth University! We also had other students get accepted to NYU, Santa Clara, LMU, and one that is hoping to get off the wait list at my college, the University of Chicago!
  • The team will shift focus for students starting at 2 year colleges and career training programs.

Reflection #2-

I am looking forward to the strong focus of Tina’’s leadership on our Academic program monitoring (APM) and the focus on key drivers of student achievement with our Principals and Assistant Principals.

Accountability Tracking:

Since January, Tina and her team have been focused on making sure we are holding ourselves accountable (through our accountability tracker) and checking on the core practices we expect to see.

MAP Assessment:

Additionally, we took our annual MAP test this spring, and our spring to spring growth (last year to this year) saw some exciting areas of growth, as well as places where we need to focus and impact as we close the year.

  • Highlights:
    • Lighthouse High School had consistent growth in both ELA and Math
    • Middle School ELA at both schools saw strong growth
    • Lodestar Elementary ELA in grades 2-5
  • Areas of Concern
    • The number of students in the first quintile nationally
    • Kindergarten and 1st Grade - we are not seeing the impact we need in early grades

Key Reflections - Staff Retention and Upcoming Legislation

Reflection #3-

Our leadership teams have done a great job of investing their staff, and many have signed their “intent to return” for the following school year. As we know, teacher, staff, and leadership continuity and retention is critical, especially if we are to continue our academic focus!

Based on our current data - our staff/teacher retention is looking strong.

  • Data by Site:
    • Lighthouse K-5: 80% Teachers returning; 100% of leadership
    • Lighthouse 6-12: 84% Teachers returning; 100% of Leadership (one promotion to Director of Student Services)
    • Lodestar K-5: 45% Teachers returning; 5 teachers on the fence. 100% of leaders returning. (new AP hired)
    • Lodestar 6-12: 80% of Teachers returning; 100% of leadership. 2 new vacancies with addition of Senior class.
    • Shared Service: 100% returning

Reflection #4-

Politics have added a layer of complexity for our organization. We will need to spend some time during this next legislative cycle on two bills (one that we will actively support and one we will oppose) that have major implications for LCPS

There are two key Bills we are actively working on:

Support of SB 739 (Alvarado-Gil)

SB 739 would push all charter renewals in the state of California back by two years, which would be ideal for LPCS, as our charter renewals are currently set for the fall of 2024 (Lodestar), 2025 (Lighthouse HS), and 2026(Lighthouse K-8). The major argument in this legislation is the incomplete data on the state dashboard due to the lack of assessment continuity caused by the Pandemic.

Opposition of AB 1604 (Bonta)

Unfortunately, Oakland Assembly Member Mia Bonta is back with a different bill that impacts state supported facilities (like the one we did for Lodestar in the fall). The major differences between AB 2484 (which failed in committee last year) and AB 1604 is that last year's bill is that AB 2484 spoke to property interest if a school was funded by CSFGP; AB 1604 gives the Attorney General - currently her husband - much more substantial authority and oversight in the case of a disposition of a charter school facility funded by CSFGP.
