Explaining Questions

These are good questions to explain.

Start with:

Why?

How?

In what way?

These are the questions that ask you to explain things.

Why does salt work better than gravel to clear ice off of the road?

How does gravity work?

In what ways are trees better for the earth?

All of these questions are all about telling someone how or why. Think of these as the “little kid” questions. Why? WHY? WHY?!?!?

Imaginative Questions

These are the kinds of questions that ask you to imagine.

They will ask you to think of things that not happened yet.

They ask you to make an educated guess.

What do you predict will happen if we took away everyone’s cell phone?

  • This is a top level question so it is more difficult to spot!
  • These are the kinds of questions that ask you to make a decision
  • They ask you to judge
  • They will ask you to justify, to argue, to determine an argument’s value
