When we are presented with a project, we need to determine the purpose of the video and who our audience is.

Then, if time allows, we scout locations; could be for an event, or interview locations with talent.

  • Be subtle with positioning of branded materials.

Get in the action �(within reason)

  • Don’t be disruptive in classrooms.
  • Capture faces, emotion.

Create a scene

  • Tight, medium, wide, different angles
  • Different focal lengths
  • It’s okay to stage certain things, take control when possible.

Technical execution

  • Give yourself options, overshoot
  • Hold for “pad”, allows us to repurpose footage
  • Don’t be afraid to get off the tripod

  • Can emitted light sources be turned off �or dimmed?
    • Overhead lights
    • Practical lights
  • Can natural light sources be controlled or blocked?
  • Does the bounced light need to be flagged off or controlled?
  • Will the lighting evolve throughout your shoot?

1. Where is light coming from?

  • Emitted light sources?
  • Natural light sources?
  • Bounced light?

3. What is a good place to set up?

  • How can I use the room to my advantage?
    • Room size?
    • Large room = depth
    • Small room = less light necessary! (small rooms can be tough because of reflection)

  • When we give attention to subjects, people tend to listen better.

2. How will you set up your light sources to work within the room?

  • Try to not fight natural sources like windows, work with them if you can.
  • Identify your sources:
    • Key
    • Fill
    • Kicker

1. What is going on in �the room?

  • What lights already exist in the space?
  • Can you control those sources?
  • Identify what other bounced light might affect your subject.

3. Is your setup drawing attention where you want it?

  • Is the Key giving nice shadows?
  • Is your Fill removing unwanted harsh shadows?
  • Are you creating separation?
