With your top three, think to yourself: why do each of those matter to you?
Value Meet-and-Greets
Four-Step Process, Four-Times
You’re going to stand up and quietly/carefully move around the room—partnering up with at least four different people:
Value >>> Core Belief
We commit to and value growth as active, resilient learners.
We are curious, asking questions and exploring new skills and concepts.
We pursue myriad ideas and perspectives—especially those different from our own.
We operate with generosity and affirmation toward others as well as ourselves.
We are each an important part of our community, and our presence and voice matters.
On the back of your index card [lined side]
In the top-right corner, write your full name and the class period underneath it
Then number 1-5 (give yourself space between each number)
#1: Out of your top 3 values (on the other side), circle your top one
Then, on the lined side, write that value again and what it means/why it matters to you
Example:
Growth - It is important to always be active and resilient as a continual learner.
#2: when you think about what YOUR relationship has been with school up to this point in your education—how you've been supported, how much you've learned, how well you've been prepared for whatever is next beyond high school—how would you rate it (1-7)? [“why” is optional]
7 = Incredibly positive and supportive
1 = Very negative and/or harmful
Also write this number clearly on the other sticky note on your desk (it can take up the whole space) without your name or explaining why.
#3: which of these is most important to you from a teacher/class—especially reflecting on wha you need in this moment coming back to school in-person? (if you have a strong or insightful reason, feel free to add it as a note)
A) Clear Expectations/Consistency | D) Honesty, Transparency, and Trust |
B) Challenge and/or Creativity | E) Variety, Fun and Energy |
C) Patience and Kindness | F) Other: ________ (write what it is) |
#4: when you are facing a challenge or obstacle, as a student or otherwise, how do you typically respond?
A) Reach out for help immediately—100% okay in advocating for myself! | D) Stress/fixate on it unproductively—sometimes I can get in my own head and feel really overwhelmed |
B) Buckle down and try to solve it on my own—usually I can figure things out if I just try hard enough | E) Get frustrated—I can get upset if things aren't working right away, if I'm being honest |
C) Avoid it and move on to other things—I tend to procrastinate and ignore challenges, if I'm being honest | F) Other: ________ (explain what you do in this space) |
#5: Is there an interesting and/or important fact for a teacher to know about me as a student?
[feel free to use this space however you’d like, from the pronouns you use, to questions you might have, to fun facts]
