Class News

Please continue practicing the phonics skills sent home each week. Thank you for your ongoing support! It’s always exciting at school to hear students say, “Hey, that’s one of our words!”—it’s wonderful to see them recognizing these words throughout the day.

During the month of January, we will continue to focus on the following objectives:

  • I can print with spaces between my words.
  • I can write a sentence using capital letters and periods.
  • I can use letter sounds to help read words.
  • I can identify the main character in a story.
  • I can sequence a story by putting events in order.

This month, we will work especially on using capitals and periods correctly and leaving proper spaces between words. Our stories will have a winter theme!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and joyful break. I’m looking forward to all the wonderful things 2026 has in store and am excited to be back at school, reconnect with the students, and have a great January. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Math

We will continue practicing patterns and sorting, then move on to comparing numbers (equal to, less than, greater than). If time allows, we will start focusing on addition and subtraction up to 12. When we begin addition, we will explore different strategies for solving problems, such as using fingers, drawing pictures, number lines, or mental math. After that, we will introduce subtraction, which is usually a bit more challenging to learn.

We will explore important questions about how we live and work in our communities:

  • How can people work together to meet their needs and wants?
  • In what ways can people contribute to their communities?

These discussions will help students understand the value of cooperation and the many ways everyone can play a role in making their community a better place.

This month, we will conclude our study of matter and shift our focus to Earth systems and the winter season. If time allows, we will also explore energy and how objects and animals move.

On Tuesday, February 3rd, we will be taking part in an engaging in-school field trip called “A Day at the Race Track.” Please see the letter for full details about the activity. We require four parent volunteers for this field trip to take place. The fee is $16 per student, payable through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
