Defining AI and Generative AI
Artificial intelligence (AI): a computer program or app that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence
Generative AI: a type of AI that is designed to create content, like pictures or writing
What are some examples of AI?
What are some examples of AI in Education?
Speech recognition: Google voice typing, Zoom and Google Meet auto-captioning
Creating images from text: Canva: Text to Image, DALL-E
Optical character recognition (OCR): OrbitNote, Microsoft Lens, Google Keep
Text editors and autocorrect: Grammarly, Read&Write, Microsoft Word, Google Docs
What is ChatGPT?
What is ChatGPT & how does it work?
ChatGPT by OpenAI is an example of Generative AI, a type of AI that is designed to create content, like pictures or writing.
It uses a Large Language Model (LLM), where it learns from huge volumes of data; these massive amounts of text are fed into the AI algorithm so that it can apply its knowledge to predict and generate content.
Humans type in a prompt and it responds using text or code.
As of this writing, ChatGPT 3 pulls data prior to September 2021.
What are some examples of what ChatGPT can write?
What are some positive uses of ChatGPT in the classroom?
What are some concerns about ChatGPT?
Privacy: age, type of information that you share
Plagiarism and copyright
Access: widening the digital divide
Ethics: no credit for creators; mixture of many people's work
Bias and misinformation: takes on the problematic content of the original material; includes developers' implicit biases
Algorithmic bias: prejudices against marginalized communities can be incorporated into algorithms at all development stages; bias is present because each step requires human judgment
What other examples are there of generative AI?
DALL-E: generates art
Midjourney: generates art
VALL-E: generates audio
Stable Diffusion: generates art
Scribble Diffusion: scribble to make refined art
…and there are many more!
What is BPS’s position?
BPS Position on Use of Generative AI
BPS’s position on AI is currently under development. This includes the use of AI by staff and how schools can teach about and with AI. We are looking at updating our existing policies.
Schools might consider developing guidelines (not policies) for AI use.
Our students must follow:
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT: The use or attempted use of dishonest or unfair method(s) or practice(s) used to gain advantage in academic(s) by means including, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarizing, copyright infringement, or unauthorized use of problem-solving websites/applications.
✅ BPS Acceptable Use Policy for Students
I am responsible for my conduct on all online sites.
I am responsible for respecting other people’s property online.
I am responsible for following school rules whenever I publish anything online.
What is BPS doing with AI tools?
We want to learn about and embrace AI tools.
Who has access to ChatGPT?
AI in Education and the Workforce
What are tech companies doing now with AI?
Open AI: Generating text-based prompts in multiple languages including code (ChatGPT) and generating images from a prompt or modifying an existing image (DALL-E)
Google: Making search recommendations and auto-captioning audio on webpages through Chrome captions; BARD coming soon to Edu accounts
Microsoft: Detecting images and describing them, making improvements to presentations, and integrating OpenAI tools in Bing and Edge
