Session Objectives

3

A recent CMP Collaborative Learning Initiative - “Alignment between the CS and corporate ESG frameworks”- outlined a way forward for CMP to engage more closely with the evolving ESG field.  In time, this field is likely to influence the initiation of conservation projects, and the flow of funding to them.

  • Review the work completed to-date
  • decide on CMP’s goal in this space and relative priorities
  • confirm or adapt recommendations
  • develop workplan for next phase of the work.

Overview of landscape - CMP work to-date

Collaborative Learning Initiative - “Science Based Target Networks”

Worked to build awareness within SBTN of the Conservation Standards, and its supporting network of practitioners (CMP / CCNet) and ensure alignment between each organisation's processes.

Vision

Nature-related frameworks build off and align with each other to send a single, unified message to not-for-profit organizations, businesses, government agencies, and funders on how to act and report on both nature loss and climate change.

Project Goals

  1. Build relationships and mutual understanding and use the capacity that exists within our networks to support and learn from each other.
  2. Increase our collaborations, using a common language, compatible frameworks, processes, guidelines, and tools.
  3. Help organizations disclose the effectiveness of their projects and programs using common targets, indicators, and measurement methods.
  4. Help organizations demonstrate their increased effectiveness at lowering pressures and restoring nature.

Recommendations

Establish a working group

Create a working group whose primary goal would be to foster relationships and collaborations that lead to an increased alignment with other nature-related frameworks (e.g., SBTN, TNFD, ISSB, Natural Capital Protocol (NCP), IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions, the Biological Diversity Protocol (BDP) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)).

Review / adopt complementary external classifications

Officially adopt external classifications that are complementary to CMP/IUCN's habitat, stress, threats, and actions classification schemes (e.g. for Human well-being targets, Ecosystem services, Ecosystems, Economic activities, and Drivers).

Contribute to development of standard objectives and indicators

Contribute to the development of standard objectives and indicators to track results and impacts of conservation initiatives.

Review selected actors and methods

Select nature-related disclosure actors and methods (e.g., the UNEP WCMC Aligning Biodiversity Measurement for Business (ABMB) project), ensure that Miradi is compatible with disclosure systems and that information can be easily transferred.
