Description of initiative/actions and any pre/post data

Teachers were noticing the delayed thinking and problem solving on more complex math problems, specifically word problems, due to lack of fluency in math facts.

What does someone need to know about the initiative if they were considering it for their own school?

  • STUDENTS do a lot of talking. The classroom will be a noisy place with students explaining their thinking on all problems. :) Teachers will need to encourage student talk and have expectations for center time developed to maintain a math focused discussion among students independently in the classroom. All grade levels can do this.

Lessons Learned

  • Needed ways to track fluency data.

  • Needed time to interview students and see the way our students were thinking.
    • Created a separate Center Time
    • Recruit help when completing interviews
  • Needed to structure lessons that required students to think about problems.
