TECHNICAL DRAWING & COMMUNICATION CHALLENGE

PHASE 1. BUILD A DESIGN

Day 1 (30 MINUTES)

  • Build a small structure out of the materials.
  • Your design can be whatever you want it to be but do not make it too complicated OR too simple.
  • You may cut the straws and coffee stirrers.
  • Cut the straws or coffee stirrers only to whole or half inch increments.
  • Materials/Tools:
    • 10 Straws, 10 Coffee Stirrers, Hot glue
    • Scissors, Hot Glue Gun, Rulers
    • Graph paper - Put your name on the back! EACH TEAM MEMBER MUST COMPETE. DO THIS STEP TOGETHER!!!

PHASE 2. DRAW THE DESIGN Day 2 (20 MINUTES)

  • Create a very detailed technical drawing of your design.
  • Include TOP, FRONT AND RIGHT-SIDE VIEWS, measurements, labels, etc.
  • Include whatever information you think someone else would need to create an exact copy of your design.
  • Your GOAL is for another group to be able to make a perfect replica of your original design. Details are crucial!

EACH TEAM MEMBER MUST COMPLETE!!!

PHASE 3. BUILD A REPLICA

Day 2 & 3 (25 MINUTES)

  • Mr. Ranallo will give you a detailed drawing from another group.
  • You have 1 class to build an exact replica of the other groups design.
  • You can only use their drawing for information. You cannot ask the other group any questions at all!
  • You may be missing some needed information but try to make the best replica you can based of the drawing that you have.

WEAR SAFETY GLASSES

CLEAN UP

  • Put away all glue guns, scissors, rulers, & safety glasses.
  • Clean up any scrap materials. Put in the recycling bin.
  • Get the original model from the group whose drawing you received. Take it and your replica back to your group.

PHASE 4. VIEW AND REVIEW

Day 1 (5-10 MINUTES)

  • Get the original model from the group whose drawing you had.
  • Compare your replica to the original model.
  • Look at measurements and materials also.
  • Answer the review questions about this activity on the google classroom form.

DISCUSS

  • How close was your model to the original?
  • Was it easy or difficult to create an exact replica?
  • What could we all have done to improve the results of this activity? How could we improve our drawings to get more exact replicas?
  • What does this activity teach you about creating a drawing for a design?
