Chicago Field Museum--The Field Museum acknowledges that it was built on the traditional homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: The Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe Nations, as well as the Ho’Chunk, Meskwaki, Sauk, and Miami Nations. The Museum recognizes that the region we now call Chicago was the traditional homeland of many Indigenous nations, and remains home to diverse Native people today. The land we walk was and remains Native land.

In recent years it has become a trend to acknowledge the traditional homelands of the Indigenous peoples of a particular area through a land acknowledgement. This type of activity is designed to bring more awareness and understanding to the history of Indigenous peoples and their territories. But a land acknowledgement should also be more than that; it should be a call to rethink one’s own relationship with the environment and the histories of all peoples. The American Indian Center has crafted the following land acknowledgement to help all rethink their relationships with the city, the land and the environment.

Chicago is the traditional homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: The Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi Nations. Many other Tribes like the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sac and Fox also called this area home. Located at the intersection of several great waterways, the land naturally became a site of travel and healing for many Tribes. American Indians continue to call this area home and now Chicago is home to the third largest Urban American Indian community that still practices their heritage, traditions and care for the land and waterways. Today, Chicago continues to be a place that calls many people from diverse backgrounds to live and gather here. Despite the many changes the city has experienced, both our American Indian and Architecture communities see the importance of the land and this place that has always been a city home to many diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Did you know that the practice of fair housing testing conducted by FHCO, and other fair housing organizations came out of the Chicago Freedom Movement?

Also known as the Open Housing Movement, the concept “open housing ,” which is the basis for the Chicago Freedom Movement, comes from the call for a housing market that does not restrict access to anyone based on their protected identity, including race and national origin, which are federally protected classes today.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was instrumental in the Chicago Freedom Movement, bringing his Atlanta-based civil rights organization, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) together with local organizers in Chicago. One of those organizers was Albert Raby, a Chicago activist who led the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO), that was gearing up to lead demonstrations for fair housing at that time.

Chicago Women Activists & Leaders 1945 - 2000

We began with women who were involved in the Second Wave women’s movement in Chicago and participated in activities such as reproductive rights, the fight for the ERA, anti-rape and violence movements, equal pay for equal work, anti-discrimination in the workplace, women’s health, legal rights, child care, self-defense, and other efforts to empower and secure the safety and rights of women in the 1970s and 80s.

As our project matured we expanded the scope of our work to include women’s activism in broader areas including civil rights, community organizing, anti-war and peace work, labor organizing, politics, Lesbian and Gay liberation, neighborhood and housing issues, environmental justice, school reform, Black, Latina, Asian, and Native American women’s activism, the work of women religious, and the expansion and reorganization of the curriculum by academic scholars and other educators. Our scope is still expanding as we continually discover new areas of advocacy by remarkable Chicago women working in many arenas of social justice.
