A Bundle of Credits

​Eight to ten Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits consisting of:

  • four major credits;
  • two to four other required credits; and
  • a minimum of two required cooperative education credits.​

Certification and Training

​All SHSM programs require 6-8 sector-recognized certifications or training courses.

They include specified numbers of:

  • compulsory certifications or training courses(e.g. Standard First Aid, CPR level C);
  • elective certifications and/or training courses, which are selected from a list provided by the Ministry of Education for each sector.

Experiential Learning and Career Exploration Activities

  • Experiential learning and career exploration activities allow students to explore, observe, participate in, and reflect on a variety of sector-specific experiences and careers.
  • These activities enable students enrolled in the SHSM program to learn about the opportunities available to them in careers that interest them.​
  • i.e. Skills Canada competition, job shadowing, career fair/panel conference.

Reach Ahead Experiences

These are learning experiences that are connected with the student’s postsecondary plans

i.e. attending a conference/workshop, touring a postsecondary institution, completing a Dual Credit course, etc.

Sector-Partnered Experiences

SPE activities are experiential activities co-delivered with a sector partner. They provide students with the opportunity to gain insight into the relationship between their sector program and how the following are used within the sector:

  • ​Mathematical Literacy
  • Contextualized Coding
  • ICE (Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship)

Who can take a SHSM program?

Any student in grades 11 and 12 registered in one of our high schools with an SHSM program can enroll.

What if the SHSM program I am interested in is not available at my school? Can I take a SHSM program in another school?

SHSM programs are school specific. You are able to become a part of any SHSM program available at your school only.

Can students in specialized programs (i.e., IB, AP, STEAM, OYAP) also belong to a SHSM program?

YES!

Can a student belong to more than one SHSM program?

Students can only enroll in one SHSM program.

How is SHSM offered during the pandemic?

All of the SHSM components are currently being offered online.

Can I take Co-op in summer school or night school?

Yes!

How does Co-op work during COVID?

Co-op, like all other courses of study, is still being offered to students.

Where safe, in person placements are still happening.

Many placements have transitioned to an online platform.

No, you do not have to find your own Co-op placement.

Does this program take place during the school day or after school – is it extracurricular?

SHSM is a program that students complete during the school day, alongside their other commitments.

It is possible with careful planning.

How do I apply for SHSM?

Express interest to join the program during grade 10 course selection time. Your school guidance counsellor or SHSM teacher will let you know the next steps to apply.
