If SHSM is for grade 11 and 12 students, you might be wondering how you can get involved if you are in grade 7, 8 or 9?

Here are some examples...

USE myBlueprint to learn more about yourself through some self-reflective quizzes as well as explore post-secondary pathways and careers.

PARTICIPATE in career exploration and experiential learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. For example, participate in Take Your Kids To Work Day, job shadow a friend or family member, volunteer in your community.

CONSIDER talking to a grade 11 or 12 student already in SHSM to learn about their experience in the program.

ATTEND information nights, such as this one, and school assemblies to learn more about your opportunities.

DISCUSS your hopes for high school and what you may want to study with parents/guardians, teachers, guidance counsellors, older siblings, relatives etc. - and ask yourself how the SHSM program at your highschool of choice may help you achieve your goals.

IMAGINE yourself in a SHSM program at a high school. No matter what your pathway of choice is - there is lots to learn and experience as an SHSM student. Remember, this program is designed for all students.

A Bundle of Credits

Eight to ten Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits consisting of:

four major credits;
two to four other required credits; and
a minimum of two required cooperative education credits.

Certification and Training

All SHSM programs require 6-8 sector-recognized certifications or training courses.

They include specified numbers of:

compulsory certifications or training courses(e.g. Standard First Aid, CPR level C);
elective certifications and/or training courses, which are selected from a list provided by the Ministry of Education for each sector.

Experiential Learning and Career Exploration Activities

Experiential learning and career exploration activities allow students to explore, observe, participate in, and reflect on a variety of sector-specific experiences and careers.
These activities enable students enrolled in the SHSM program to learn about the opportunities available to them in careers that interest them.
i.e. Skills Canada competition, job shadowing, career fair/panel conference.

Reach Ahead Experiences

These are learning experiences that are connected with the student’s postsecondary plans

i.e. attending a conference/workshop, touring a postsecondary institution, completing a Dual Credit course, etc.

Sector-Partnered Experiences

SPE activities are experiential activities co-delivered with a sector partner. They provide students with the opportunity to gain insight into the relationship between their sector program and how the following are used within the sector:

Here is a resume of a student who participated in SHSM.

The SHSM program allows students to participate in a wide range of experiences which sets them apart as having completed industry-recognized certifications, networked with community agencies and local businesses, and opened doors for future employment, while learning new skills.

For example, this student has a number of certifications, a high school dual credit (which means the student took a college course while in high school), they added their coop experience on their resume, as well as some experiential learning opportunities.

Lastly, this student shows some enhanced sector specific references which can speak to the student’s abilities.

It’s easy to see the advantages of participating in a SHSM program on a resume.

A Business SHSM allows students to explore their interests in the business sector. Dante Alighieri and Senator O’Connor College School two of eleven Business programs across the TCDSB.

This program provides a foundation for students to develop knowledge and skills in the area of Business for all pathways.

A Business SHSM can benefit students interested in entrepreneurship, accounting, marketing, public relations, law, and human resources. This program can benefit everyone because business pathways exist in every industry!

Some partnerships for Business SHSM programs include Rotman, TD Canada Trust, SheBiz, and The Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario.

The demand for professionals in the Health & Wellness sector in Ontario and across Canada is increasing as the age of our population increases. This sector has a wide variety of career opportunities both in mainstream health care as well as complementary and alternative medicine, and employs close to two million people across Canada.

Health care professionals, child care workers, fitness instructors, spa employees, veterinary technicians, and mental health workers are just some of the numerous occupations that the SHSM Health & Wellness program prepares students to pursue.

The Health and Wellness SHSM program is offered across 15 high schools in the TCDSB providing students with authentic and experiential learning opportunities to explore this sector.

At Madonna, one of five Non-Profit SHSM programs in the TCDSB, one of our passionate teachers describes the Non-Profit program as follows:

Our society, our schools, and our classrooms are at a point in human existence where we no longer ask our youth

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

we instead ask; “how do you want to change the world?”

A SHSM Non Profit program asks our students to answer that question.

This program exposes our young learners to a broad range of social injustices and human rights issues in the world in order to educate them and inspire them to answer their Christian duty to promote justice for all.

The altruistic goals of the Non Profit SHSM does not underestimate young people’s power to make a difference in our world.

Today we need more humanity than ever, and rational thinking from people who are unafraid to take responsibility and leadership!

Canada's sports industry is growing. Dozens of cities now have professional sports teams and franchises. In Ontario, there are many professional teams in sports ranging from hockey to lacrosse to soccer. The Canadian sports sector generates around $8 billion a year, according to the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Students in a Sports SHSM program at Marshall McLuhan (one of our nine Sports SHSM programs across the system) may:

Gain skills, knowledge and experience in the areas of sports coaching, performance, recreation, rehabilitation, media and broadcasting.

Transportation is essential to our everyday life. Different modes of transportation including air, rail, road, and space provide many career options for those interested in this sector.

If you are interested in a career in engineering, urban planning, becoming an aircraft pilot or technician, or auto or train mechanic, an SHSM program in Transportation at one of five schools, like Bishop Marrocco Thomas Merton, might be the right program for you.

Students in the Transportation SHSM program may be exposed to skilled trades and professional areas such as automotive service technician, truck and coach, motorcycle, marine, automotive engineering and design.

Who can take a SHSM program?

Any student in grades 11 and 12 registered in one of our high schools with an SHSM program can enroll.

What if the SHSM program I am interested in is not available at my school? Can I take a SHSM program in another school?

SHSM programs are school specific. You are able to become a part of any SHSM program available at your school only.

Can students in specialized programs (i.e., IB, AP, STEAM, OYAP) also belong to a SHSM program?

YES!

Students can only enroll in one SHSM program.
