Senior Project (paper hugs)

What is our project ?
Lily and I partnered with Sunrise day camp, a camp for kids with cancer. We worked with the lower schoolers to create cards for the children with cancer. Our goal was to brighten their day and to put a smile on their faces because being in the hospital can be very challenging and it makes people feel better knowing you have supporters from the outside.

Why we decided to do this project?
The past two summers I had the opportunity to work at Sunrise day camp and get to watch these children with a battling illness fight it everyday and manage to come to camp with a smile on their face. This was very inspiring to me and I would tell Charlie stories and she knew she wanted to help in another way. When we started brainstorming senior project ideas we knew it had to be sunrise related. I then remembered Sunrise on Wheels where people go to the hospitals and bring the kids toys to distract them. So we decided to make cards with the lower schoolers. We thought if kids got letters from other kids it would make them happy.

How did we plan?
In order to make sure that we could execute the project we contacted someone from sunrise so that we could start the project. After we got the project approved, Lily and I met with Ms. Lawn to discuss working with the lower schoolers to create the cards. She loved the idea and immediately started helping. We created a slide presentation and presented it to the lower schoolers to tell them about our mission and get them excited. We then went to staples and got all the supplies we would need to make the cards.

How did the lower schoolers get involved?
The Lower schoolers came down by grade and started making cards. We wrote inspirational notes on paper so that they could see what to write, but we gave them creative freedom to write and draw whatever they wanted. The kids had so much fun with this and they all kept asking when we were coming back so they could make more cards.

What challenges did we face?
We struggled finding times to meet with Ms. Lawn in the beginning because we were both very busy with sports and school work. Another challenge was getting in contact with the women at sunrise. One more challenge that we faced when creating the presentation for the lower schoolers because trying to figure out a way to talk about cancer without scaring them was difficult.

How did did we overcame the challenges?
Charlie and I finally sat down together and found a time to meet with Ms. Lawn. After trying to figure out who to email for the project since the other woman stopped working for sunrise, I asked one of the directors at the camp and was able to get someones email who could help us and she was very helpful and loved the idea. For the presentation we didn’t really know what to do because we knew we had to bring it up but we didn’t know how. Ms. Lawn showed us so we talked about it in a very light way and not going to in depth which we thought was perfect because they all got the idea but did not get scared from it.

How did our project evolve?
We learned that younger students need more guidance and help than we expected. We spent a lot of time helping the kids brainstorm ideas. We wanted to shift away from making simple cards, to making them thoughtful with nice messages and drawings. Lily and I learned that service projects change a lot and we needed to be flexible for it to work.

Our Successes
We thought this project was a HUGE success. All students participated enthusiastically with a smile on their faces. They were intrigued and excited to help a good cause. We came out with over 200 cards! We helped spread kindness and encouragement. We definitely completed our project goals.

What did we learn?
We learned how rewarding and important giving back is. Lily and I are so glad we chose this project because we have been working on this cause for 3 years through our club, Kids For a Cure. We learned about leadership, communication, organization, teamwork, and compassion.
