WHY?

• Since 1976, February has been designated as Black History Month- an annual celebratory month to highlight the central role that African Americans have played, and continue to play, in U.S. History.

​

• While we take time to spotlight the impact of our Black leaders throughout this month, it is imperative to learn about, honor, celebrate, and incorporate these influences into our everyday lives.

​

• Black History is SO MUCH MORE than just a month of recognition.

​

• Waterloo is providing an opportunity for students to creatively showcase their inspirations and personal connections with influential Black leaders- past or present.

Contest Prompt:

​

Demonstrate how your life has been inspired and/or

influenced by a Black or African American leader.

​

• We encourage student creativity when addressing the contest prompt above. Entries may include, but are not limited to, the following forms:

​

• Essay
• Poem
• Drawing/ Digital Illustration
• Song Lyrics

​

• Entries may be submitted as a document, image, PDF, screen shot, and/or link.

​

• Please SAVE all files using the following format: Student’sGrade-Student’sLastName-Title
