Bird Island - Our investigation study
A group of scientists recently returned from surveying Bird Island, a remote island in the Atlantic Ocean.
This island is inhabited by people.
The scientists identified six species of birds living on the island.
Here is a map they created after surveying the island (on your table too). Each population of birds is shown as a unique symbol on the map and indicates a sampling site.
Looking at the map, how many ecoregions are on Bird Island?
How could you compare one ecoregion to another?
Purpose of this investigation
Typically, ecosystems with high species abundance and high species richness are those that are complex enough to withstand a disturbance event.
Goal: To determine the species abundance and richness in each ecoregion to analyze which ecoregion is most likely to survive a disturbance.
You will work in groups of 6 people

Multiple food sources prevents a food chain collapse:
The ravens don’t lose all their food sources if the tree frogs are wiped out by a virus.
Multiple predators control population sizes:
The deer population is held in check by the coyotes, even if the mountain lions are hunted to local extinction. This protects the trees (deer’s food) from being overeaten.
Multiple species performing the same service ensures that the service isn’t interrupted by extreme events.
