I have come to believe that dam-breaching is not really about dams. It's probably not even about fish. Dam-breaching is America's own exercise in truth and reconciliation. For a hundred years we thought we could have it all -- cheap power, salmon, and alfalfa fields in the desert -- but we were wrong.
We thought we needed power and wealth, but we discovered to our sorrow that what we really need are health and beauty and a way of life that listens to the land.
What humans destroy, we often destroy forever.
But a river? A river has the power to forgive. To breach a dam is to admit mistakes, and so to release the power of the river to heal itself, to begin to heal the rift between human and nature, user and used.

It’s important to say what hope is not: it is not the belief that everything was, is, or will be fine. The evidence is all around us of tremendous suffering and tremendous destruction.
“Critical thinking without hope is cynicism, but hope without critical thinking is naïvete,” the Bulgarian emigre writer Maria Popova recently remarked.
And Patrisse Cullors, one of the founders of Black Lives Matter, early on described the movement’s mission as to “Provide hope and inspiration for collective action to build collective power to achieve collective transformation, rooted in grief and rage but pointed towards vision and dreams.”
It’s a statement that acknowledges that grief and hope can coexist.

To breach a dam is to admit mistakes, and so to release the power of the river to heal itself
When the Edwards Dam on Maine’s Kennebec River was breached in 1999, activists hoped some of the long-missing fish runs would return, and local residents hoped their town would benefit from cleaner water and more business. It was a hard-won fight: taking down a functioning hydroelectric dam for the benefit of fish had never been done before.
What actually happened over the next few years amazed everyone, and made the breaching of this dam a model for taking out other dams across Maine and then across the country.

As soon as the dam came down, the river rebounded. Fish immediately had access to 18 more miles of habitat, up to the town of Waterville at the mouth of the Sebasticook River. Atlantic sturgeon began to swim past the former dam site, and alewife and shad soon returned. Within a year seals could be seen chasing alewives, a type of river herring, 40 miles upstream from the ocean.
And with alewives coming back, so did everything that eats them — river otters, bears, mink, bald eagles, osprey and blue herons.
The benefits spread to the community as well. A park and trails were built along the waterfront. “People are out on the water, mostly paddling a kayak or canoeists,” says Graber. “The downtown is starting to make use of the river more. The buildings that have been redeveloped are now using the river as an amenity.
After another dam was removed upstream, The number of alewives returning to spawn jumped from 78,000 in 1999 to 5.5 million last year.
