THE BASIC REALITIES OF THE NEW CREATION

2 Corinthian 5:14-21

14For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.b The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19that is, in Christ God was reconcilingc the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Points to Note

  • There are two creations – One in Adam and one in Christ. The former (old creation) and the latter (new creation).

  • The Bible recognizes three races of humans. Two are of a corrupted stock and one is of an incorruptible. They are; The Jews, the Gentiles (nations of the world) and the church of God.

The New Creation was Foretold in the Old Testament

  • Psalms 102: 12But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. 13You will arise and have pity on Zion (The Jews); it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come. 15 Nations (The Gentiles) will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory. Let this be recorded for a generation to come,so that a people (the New Creation-the Church) yet to be created may praise the LORD

  • Psalms 22: 30Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;31they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.

  1.   vs.17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (John 3:3; 15:5; Rom.8:1; Gal.6:14,15)

‘New’ Gr. /kainos/ = new in quality (innovation), because "not found exactly like this before.“

  • of a new kind; unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of
  • new, which as recently made is superior to what it succeeds.

‘Creation’ Gr. /ktisis/ = Creature of some particular kind or class of created things or beings

In other words, when we embraced Christ message and believed in His death and resurrection we became born again. A brand new, fresh and unprecedented being came into existence.

Not from the Jews nor the Gentiles (world’s nations) but from God. Hence the New Creation’s citizenship is from heaven (Phil. 3:20)

The new creation did not emerge from the old. It is not a renovation of the old or a reformation, but a recreation; a direct work of God (Gal.6:15, Eph. 2:10).

A Special Breed1 pet. 2: 9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

  1. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come

‘has passed away’ – The aorist tense used here indicate a decisive break with the old life at the moment of salvation. There is no history of your past. It was as if there was no existence before the new life.

‘the new has come’ – Paul uses the perfect indicative active third person singular tense in Greek grammar. It describes an action that was completed in the past and continues to have relevance in the present, which means to stress the abiding results of our union with Christ even to the third person singular.

This new life is indomitable, ever increasing prosperous life. Amen!

A holy race - It is a race sanctified through and through by the holy Spirit with a priestly influence.

A peculiar race - Gr./periousios/ = a purchased possession. There’s a price tag on you – His Blood.

A royal race – Kingly and priestly in influence and authority

A choice race – chosen and distinct from the rest of the world.
