SUMMER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING 2024
01
While often done by academics looking to publish a paper on their own, it’s also just a process by which a group of people come to understand what the state of research in a given field is.
02
Understanding academic papers is HARD unless you’re already an expert in the field…and sometimes even if you are an expert. So this is a process that as worthwhile as it is, is quite daunting for our students.

So wouldn’t it be nice if we could use AI to help them with the process?
And yes, we can!
Bringing in AI with a Poe Chatbot
What can you do with Poe? In their own words:
It’s a site that lets you build on top existing AI tools to customize for your needs, and then lets you share that with the world…or your class.
My Lit Chatbot: Mr_Breakdown
Description
Using Mr_Breakdown
01
It’s simple, start with going to the URL:
(You will need to sign in with an account.)

05
Tell your Bot how to behave
Please read a given academic paper that the user needs help understanding:
1. Write a response, in language at a high school level of reading. Make sure your tone is positive and encouraging.
2. Summarize the paper with 5 most important takeaways.
3. Highlight up to 3 foundational ideas the paper builds on top of that readers may not be familiar with, so that they have the option of learning more about them.
4. Give 3 open-ended Questions that require varying degrees of depth of knowledge about the contents of the paper.
5. Ask, "What else can I break down for you?".
For reference, here’s my Prompt for Mr_Breakdown:

06
Consider adding a Knowledge Base
(Note: For my bot, I have no Knowledge Base, because the user is intended to upload a document of their own choosing.)
07 Add a Greeting message
Building a Chatbot
08
Add a Bot profile, and when you’re ready, made the bot publicly accessible.
07 And you’re set!
(There are more advanced options, but I wouldn’t worry about them.)
Potential Pitfalls
01
Generative AI remains a thing that we always need to emphasize can be wrong, and might say something inappropriate. Don’t take what it does at face value, and don’t let students do so either.
02
The Generative AI competitive landscape is in flux, and we don’t know which tools will be around for the long-term. Poe.com may not be a site that lasts, but the steps you take in working on the site will be largely transferable should other competitors win out.
03
Locked-down Chromebooks will not allow students to download and upload files, and so for these classes the teacher will need to build a Chatbot with a pre-set Knowledge Base. No longer a problem!
