Maths Planning

Term 3

2 of 9

Teacher Notes:

Start each day with XtraMaths and Maths-Whizz. Once the students have finished XtraMaths they will need to spend a minimum of 15 minutes each day on Maths-Whizz. This is the same expectation as last term. They will be given 20 minutes at the start of each lesson to complete XtraMaths. Once they have finished this they will need to silently move onto Maths-Whizz until the 20 minutes is up.

Fires:

  • This week we will be focusing on multiplication word problems which we looked at last term.
  • We will start with a multiplication game - I have who has, this will look at our timetables and getting better at recalling them. This will be timed each time that we meet during the week and we will try and make it better each day!
  • Then as a group we will go through examples of multiplication word problems and use different strategies to figure of the problems:
    • Miss Parrant has 7 students in her class, each student is given 6 pencils. How many pencils does Miss Parrant need for her whole class?
      • Arrays (7 groups of 6)
      • We know that 7 x 5 = 35 and that 7 x 1 = 7 so we go 7 + 35 = 42
    • Miss Parrant has 9 boxes, each box has 8 pens in it. How many pens does Miss Parrant have altogether?
      • Arrays ( 9 groups of 8)
      • We know that 9 x 10 = 90 and that 9 x 2 = 18 so we can 90-18 = 72
  • Focus: now we will need to discuss as a group that sometimes we will use larger numbers which we can use an array for but it would take a long time to draw it so we should try and find common multiplication facts that we already know to make it easier we will do some more examples.
    • Miss Parrant has 27 boxes in each box there are 3 stickers. How many stickers in total does Miss Parrant have?
      • We know that 20 x 3 = 60 and 5 x 3 = 15 and 2 x 3 = 6 = 20 + 15 +6 = 20 +20 + 1 = 41
    • Miss Parrant has 32 students in her maths class, each student is given 6 books. How many books i total does Miss Parrant’s class get given?

Kent to come in and observe and team teach with my maths class

  • We will look at equivalent fractions and see a new perspective on teaching fractions
  • Prior to this lesson
    • As a class we will look at the basic elements of a fraction
    • What part of the fraction is the denominator? What does this stand for?
    • What part of the fraction is the numerator? What does this stand for?
    • What is a whole? What can we have in our lives that is seen as a whole?
    • How do we create a half? A third? A quarter?
    • We will also discuss how ½ is the same as 2/4, this will be done as a picture to show that 2/4 is the same is one half and how we can make fractions equivalent and simplified to the smallest form.
  • Lesson with Kent
    • I will set up the class to complete Maths-Whizz and XtraMaths and will then talk about how we will be looking at fractions and Mr Somerville will be helping us. Will focus on behaviour management and making sure that this work is completed silent and how important it is for us.
    • Then with Kent I will observe a lesson on fractions and then help team teach another lesson.

Fires::

  • This week we will be focusing on fractions (notes on how to explain fractions).
  • Follow up will focus on fractions and what we have learnt with Kent

  • This week we will be looking at fractions in word problems. The aim of this lesson will be for the students to be able to find the language that is associated with fractions and how to identify these problems,
  • We will go through a number of examples in class.

Setting up maths books - For number knowledge we are completing daily tasks, we will talk about the expectations of how the maths books will be set up.

Whole class:

  • This week we will be looking at measurement. The first step is making sure that they understand how to use a ruler, and talk about the differences between mm, cm, km and metres.
  • The follow up task will be looking at measuring and comparing measurements.
  • This will lead up to bigger measurement problems and looking at ratios later on in the term.

Fires

  • This week we will be looking at adding measurements and this will look at place value after the decimal point which we have been looking at during our number knowledge.
  • We will look at a number of different strategies when adding decimals.
  • We will start by looking at the place value for numbers after the decimal point and what these mean.
  • We will look at addition problems with just one number after the decimal
    • Easy one 2.3 + 1.4 = go through the steps
    • Harder 3.4 +3.7 = will see if they are able to figure out where the number goes as 4+7 = 11. Want to see if they will say .11 or 1.1
  • Once they have got this we will move onto problems that are in the hundredths column
    • Easy - 2.33 + 1.44
    • Harder 2.89 + 3.99

Whole class:

  • We are still looking at measurement as a whole but I will be looking at measurement with my class in more of a place value sense this week.

Fires

  • I found that in the last few weeks of teaching that they have this notion of as soon as you add 0.7 and 0.7 it becomes 0.14 we need to move from this way of thinking to seeing that it becomes 1.4.
  • We will be looking at place value and how many tenths I have before it trades places and becomes a one. This will be a large focus for this group for this week.
  • We will look at simple problems in this area for the whole week and we will not move on until they are aware of the place value in the tenths and the ones. Once we have got this concept as a group we will be able to move onto looking at the hundredths.
