Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

  • PBIS supports Social Emotional Learning
  • PBIS is an evidence-based framework.
  • PBIS helps students learn prosocial behaviors, and reinforces these expected behaviors in a positive way.
  • SOAR (Safe, On-task, Act Responsibly, Respect) are the four core behavior expectations for all students in our school district.
  • Schoolwide expectations are reinforced using “Eagle Bucks,” and students are provided specific praise and feedback.
  • We work together as a team! Please help support SOAR expectations at home.

Water Bottles

  • All students should come to school with a water bottle that can be filled throughout the day.
  • There are water bottle filling stations throughout the building that your child can use.

Remote Learning

  • If the school deems it appropriate, your child may need to participate in class through Zoom.

  • Please refer to Dr. Haack’s updates for more information regarding concurrent learning.

iPads

  • iPads have been provided to individual students in grades K-5.
  • These MUST come back to school each day, as we use them for in-class activities and instruction.
  • Students should be sure to charge their iPad at home. Chargers can remain in student backpacks just in case they are needed during the school day.

  • Google Classroom will be our vehicle for organizing daily assignments for students.

  • This will be where all assignments and assessments will be located for easy access.

  • We will have a Google Classroom for each subject area to keep tasks organized.

  • Feel free to look on Google Classroom to view your child’s grades on specific assignments or assessments.

  • Homework will be assigned throughout the school year.

  • If your child does not fully complete their homework and return it to school by the due date, they will receive a Sour Note.

    • Students will be given time during the school week to work on DreamBox.
    • DreamBox is a computer program that helps students develop their math skills.

Houghton Mifflin Reading/Writing Program

Core ELA: We will be reading engaging stories and connecting reading skills to the text. Skills will be spiraled throughout the year. We will be integrating writing through our new Houghton Mifflin reading program.

  • All types of writing will be taught throughout each trimester.

There will be an Essential question for each unit of study that we are investigating.

Guided reading: We will utilize Risby readers for guided reading. This allows us to differentiate for each student and connect the skills that are introduced in our Core reading lesson for the week.

Independence

  • Fifth grade brings a new level of independence.
  • It is important for child’s growth and development to have time and space to practice autonomy (self sufficiency, self reliance, self support).
  • Whenever possible, please join us in supporting your child's ability to problem solve issues they come across throughout the day on their own.
  • When tempted to solve for them, you may substitute with questions like: Where might you look to find that answer?
  • We will be modeling the steps and practices necessary to build confidence and to be resourceful.
