  • It is the concept of using language as a unitary, meaning- making system.
  • It is always in and with bilinguals.
  • It is a priority over the notion of named languages.
  • The notion that we have one linguistic repertoire from which we select features that are appropriate to communicate.

What is Translanguaging?

  • García differentiates between the concepts of ‘having a language’ and ‘languaging.’

“When translanguaging is not allowed in schools, bilingual students are placed at a disadvantage because they are assessed on only a portion of their linguistic repertoires and are taught in ways that do not fully leverage their language resources.”

Translanguaging Progressions

Knowing Your Students

Students are assessed in both languages to understand the student as a whole bilingual child.

Oral language (Speaking and Listening) and Literacy (Reading and Writing) allow for the child to demonstrate performance on various tasks, showcasing their bilingualism.

A progression at the top is shown to represent 1) how students are scored on tasks and 2) how language progresses

At the beginning of the year, teachers administer tasks for students to demonstrate their bilingualism and tune instruction to the various linguistic performances in the classroom.

🔷Additionally, teachers take time at conferences to share the progression with families and, without showing the teacher notes, allow families to fill in the progression on their student.

Distance Learning

Why in Distance Learning?

  • Connecting with families & providing support in home language increases engagement and inclusion;
  • Allows students to show all they know, particularly at a time when interaction is low;
  • Use students’ home language creatively in assignments and examples, allowing them to own their bilingualism;
  • Prompts us to rethink the way we are teaching and how we are including students’ culture and promoting cross-cultural competence
