Suicide Facts

  • In 2021, an estimated 12.3 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.5 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.7 million attempted suicide.
  • Suicide rates increased approximately 36% between 2000–2021. Suicide was responsible for 48,183 deaths in 2021, which is about one death every 11 minutes.

YOUTH:

  • Additionally, suicide rates for age group 10-24 increased 52.2% between 2000-2021.
  • Suicide was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14
  • In 2021, 9% of high school students reported attempting suicide during the previous 12 months. Suicide attempts were reported most frequently among girls compared to boys (12.4% vs. 5.3%) and among non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native students (20.1%).
  • Youth and young adults most impacted include non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native, with a suicide rate of 36.3 per 100,000.3 The next highest is non-Hispanic White people.

  • Treat others with respect (never joke about suicide).
  • Keep our school clean.
  • Participate appropriately in school lockdown and fire drills.
  • Support others being mistreated when you are a bystander.
  • Learn healthy strategies to deal with anger and stress (forgiveness).
  • Learn healthy coping skills to deal with anxiety (mindfulness).
  • Act appropriately online.
  • Report inappropriate behavior to an adult.
  • Seek help in dealing with conflict, when needed.
