The two trips we’ll talk about tonight have 2 things in common:��1. The National Parks System�Every participant on our trips will receive their own NP passport book to begin collecting stamps.��2. The great outdoors�Read this linked article about the connection between teen mental health and being outdoors.
Book of the Year
All classes of Roman Technology will be reading If Stones Could Speak to get us into the National Geographic Explorer Mindset.��
Trip #1 - Poverty Point
The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Louisiana (and one of very few in the southern USA), this site dates to 3,400 years ago. A trading hub, an engineering marvel, a monument to ingenuity of indigenous American mound builders.��Cost: $100.00
Day 1
Thursday, March 6, 2025��8 AM - Depart from Glasgow on a chartered bus.��10 AM - Travel to Natchez, MS, and visit the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians.��1 PM - Travel to Vicksburg, MS, and visit the Vicksburg National Military Park to see the Illinois Monument and the USS Cairo.��5 PM - Travel to the Poverty Point Reservoir State Park to spend the night.
Day 2
Friday, March 7, 2025��9 AM - Spend the day at Poverty Point: visit the museum, do your artifact report, have a picnic lunch, and hike the site.��3 PM - Return to Poverty Point Reservoir State Park to hike the lake, play outdoor games, enjoy a pizza dinner with s’mores, and spend the night.
Day 3
Saturday, March 8, 2025��8 AM - Depart early for home.��12 PM - Return to Glasgow Middle for pickup.
Trip #2 - Getty Villa
The Getty Villa is a museum built in the style of a Roman mansion. It houses the Greek and Roman artifact collection of J. Paul Getty. The building is a treat for visitors, but the art and artifacts inside are the real marvels!!��Cost: $1650.00
Day 1
Wednesday, April 23, 2025��Fly to Los Angeles, California.��Check into hotel.��Enjoy a dinner with your classmates.
Day 2
Thursday, April 24, 2025��Travel via charter bus to the Getty Villa.��See the artifacts, and do a report for your classmates.��Eat lunch at the museum.��Travel via bus to the Santa Monica Pier for an evening of fun.
Day 3
Friday, April 25, 2025��Travel via charter bus to the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center.��Travel via boat to Santa Cruz Island. (1 hour ride)��Meet a guide to hike, visit the seashore, and picnic on the island. Travel back to shore via boat.
Day 4
Saturday, April 26, 2025��Fly home to Baton Rouge.
Before you get too excited…
Participants will be STUDENTS and TEACHERS at Glasgow.��To build independence, parents will not be traveling with us.��All chosen participants will attend a series of MANDATORY trainings here at Glasgow to prepare for the trip (1 per month):�1. How to visit a museum without embarrassing yourself and others�2. How to pack for an outdoor trip without getting sunburned and bitten�3. How to eat dinner with your friends and not your phones�4. How to fly on a plane and ride on a boat or a bus without getting sick�5. How to stay at a hotel without losing sleep
Communication
All communication about the trips and the application process will be accessed on the Field Trips Google Classroom.
All meetings and trainings will be viewable in 3 ways:�1. In person�2. Live-streamed via Google Meet on the Google Classroom mentioned above�3. Recorded and uploaded to YouTube on the day following the in-person meeting��Attendance will be taken at each meeting, and viewers of recordings will fill out a quiz after watching the training.
The Application Process
Interested participants will need to apply by filling out a Google form, �available on this coming Friday, September 6.��Important Dates:�Sunday, September 22 at 12 Noon - Applications are DUE!�Friday, September 27 - Participant list and ordered waiting list will be released.�October 2 - Mandatory Training�November 6 - Mandatory Training�Take December and January off.�Mandatory trainings begin again in February.
Payment Process
Participants will begin payments in October.��October - FIRST PAYMENT is due (to Glasgow or Adventure Student Travel depending on the trip you participate in)�November - SECOND PAYMENT is due.�December - THIRD PAYMENT is due.�January - FOURTH PAYMENT is due�February - FIFTH and FINAL payment for Poverty Point.�March - SIXTH and FINAL payment due for Getty Villa.�
