Compensation and Condonement

  • Applies to students who first registered in 2022-23 or after
    • Typically Y1, Y2 & Y3 UG students (and MSc)
    • Not Y4 UG
  • Compensated pass credits awarded if:
    • Grade is ≤10% below pass mark (“soft fail”) after August resit
    • There is an opportunity to demonstrate the AHEP LOs elsewhere
  • For compensated pass credits:
    • Credits are awarded
    • The outcome is listed a CP the transcript but the numerical mark remains the same.
  • Accredited degree only awarded if:
    • ≤30 compensated pass credits accumulated during the programme
    • Demonstrated all AHEP LOs
    • No grade is >10% below pass mark (“hard fail”)
  • Additional resit opportunities:
    • Minimise the risk of graduating w/o accredited degree
    • Students advised to utilise all resit opportunities

New Degree Classification Algorithm

  • Degree classification calculation:
    • WMG calculation only
    • Grade distribution calculation removed
  • Borderline calculation:
    • #credits above/below threshold
  • Key messages:
    • Students who first registered prior to 2023-24 can request the old algorithm if they believe they have been disadvantaged
    • Remains important to review marks on a grade boundary due to borderline calculation

General Notes

  • BEng Weighted Mean Grade (WMG) calculation:
    • FHEQ Level 5 modules (e.g. MEC2xx) given 33.3% weighting
    • FHEQ Level 6 modules (e.g. MEC3xx) given 66.7% weighting

  • MEng Weighted Mean Grade (WMG) calculation:
    • FHEQ Level 5 modules (e.g. MEC2xx) given 20% weighting
    • FHEQ Level 6 modules (e.g. MEC3xx) given 40% weighting
    • FHEQ Level 7 modules (e.g. MEC4xx) given 40% weighting

  • Students must complete their degree within:
    • ≤ 5 years for BEng (excluding any LOA)
    • ≤ 6 years for Meng (excluding any LOA)
