Guilt And Shame

[1] Introduction:

  • Guilt and Shame are closely connected emotions. We tend to feel guilty when we have violated rules that are important to us or when we have not lived up to standards that we have set for ourselves
  • We feel guilty when we judge ourselves to have done something wrong.
  • Shame is usually connected to a highly negative view of ourselves.
  • Conclusion:
  • Many people confuse guilt (a feeling that you've done something wrong) with shame (a sense that there's something wrong with who you are).

Often only one or two of these steps are necessary to help to overcome guilt . Overcoming deep shame may require all five steps.
