Hebrew Beliefs: Genesis

  • The book of Genesis opens with a poem about creation.
  • Creation story
    • 7 days – different items each day; man (Adam) and woman (Eve) created.
  • Hebrew explanation of “evil” – “fall” of mankind
    • Adam and Eve eat from the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. They, along with the serpent that tricked them, all receive different punishments for their actions and are banished from the Garden of Eden.
  • Story of Noah's Ark
    • God punishes mankind again by flooding the earth but saves Noah and his family because he is righteous.

Hebrew Beliefs: Genesis

  • Story of Abraham
    • Israelite God selects an individual from Mesopotamia and promises that he and his wife will have descendants as numerous as the grains of sand, even though Sarah, his wife, cannot get pregnant.
  • Story of Joseph
    • Joseph, the favorite son of father Jacob (and hated for it by his 11 brothers), is sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. He is put in prison due to a lie, ends up interpreting pharaoh's disturbing dreams, and is taken out of prison by pharaoh and made vizier. He ends up re-uniting with his brothers when they come to Egypt due to a famine and the Israelites move to Egypt.
