  • NIH will not withdraw applications for wrong formatting until those due January 25, 2022

  • NIH may ask for a reformatted biosketch at JIT or in an RPPR if submitted in the incorrect format

Other Support New Requirements

Each PD/PI or senior/key personnel must electronically sign their respective Other Support form as a PDF prior to submission.

Other Support submissions that include foreign activities and resources, must submit as supporting documentation copies of:

  • contracts, grants or any other agreement (until otherwise clarified)
  • Foreign appointments and/or employment with a foreign institution

  • If they are not in English, recipients must provide translated copies

  • Remember – this includes agreements that are not with the University of Michigan

Other Support Reminders

  • All resources available to a researcher support of all research endeavors, regardless of whether or not they have
    • monetary value
    • based at the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant
  • Consulting agreements, when conducting research as part of the consulting activities
  • In-kind contributions, (office/laboratory space, equipment, supplies, or employees or students) supported by an outside source.
    • must provide reasonable estimates.

Includes:

  • Training awards, prizes, or gifts
    • Gifts have no expectation of anything (e.g. time, services, specific research activities, money, etc.) in return. An item or service given with the expectation of an associated time commitment is not a gift and is instead an in-kind contribution and must be reported as Other Support.

Re-Disclosure, if needed

  • As a reminder, requirement of immediate notification to NIH if Other Support was not sent correctly

    • Defined as “failed to disclose”

    • Do not wait until the next RPPR if the support existed prior to last disclosure

    • New Other Support items do not have to be disclosed until next reporting period

Other Support Helpful Hints

  • Be sure your list of investigators completing Other Support is the same list that NIH expects – do not send extra!

  • Work ahead on Other Support to collect copies of contracts (especially external) that are required to send

  • When unsure, contact your ORSP Project Rep to talk through required / expectations

    • NIH release date of NOT-OD-21-073 announcing upcoming changes

  • May 25, 2021 (Items due by date, regardless of when submitted)
    • Effective date for updated forms and instructions for applications and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPR)

  • January 25, 2022 (Items due by date, regardless of when submitted)
    • Failure to follow Biosketch format in applications will cause NIH to administratively withdraw application from consideration
      • During the transition to the new Biosketch format, NIH will not withdraw applications that include the previous Biosketch format.

What Will Still Be Coming....

  • Clarification as organizations (COGR, FDP, etc) talk and ask the NIH Policy office additional questions around implementation and timing

  • Guidance from U-M central campus / ORSP with U-M interpretations

  • Scramble.... Reformatting bios in the short-term and adding contract copies / having investigators sign Other Support in the long-term
    • Share information with PIs and leadership early!
