Hyphens and Dashes 5/19

Dashes (—) can be used to indicate an interruption, particularly in transcribed speech. They can also be used as a substitute for “it is,” “they are,” or similar expressions. In this way they function like colons, but are not used for lists of multiple items.

1) The chemistry student began to say, “An organic solvent will only work with” when her cell phone rang.

2) There was only one person suited to the job Mr. Lee.

** Note that dashes are double the length of hyphens. When you type two hyphens together (--), most word processors automatically combine them into a single dash.

College Essay Writing

Today is a day to work ONLY on your college essay

  • Worry about prompt choice later. Think about the story you want to tell.
  • 50 words or less to start (give context) to your story. The story and lesson is the most important part!
  • Imagery and specific details. Meaningful dialogue.
  • Future oriented conclusion. What do you hope to take with you in the future, what have you learned about yourself, what are you looking forward to, etc.
