Layers and Addresing

Data Link Layer

  • Manages physical addressing, error detection, and access to the medium.
  • Uses MAC addresses (Media Access Control).
  • Example Protocols: Ethernet, Wi-Fi.

Network Layer

  • Handles logical addressing and routing of packets across different networks.
  • Uses IP addresses (Internet Protocol).
  • Example Protocols: IPv4, IPv6, ICMP.

Transport Layer

  • Ensures reliable data transfer and segmentation/reassembly of data streams.
  • Uses Port numbers for process-to-process communication.
  • Example Protocols: TCP, UDP.

Addresses in Network

MAC Address (Data Link Layer)

  • Purpose: Uniquely identifies devices on the same local network.
  • Format: 48 bits (e.g., 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E).
  • Usage: Used in Ethernet frames for communication within the same subnet.

IP Address (Network Layer)

  • Purpose: Logical addressing for devices across different networks.
  • Format: IPv4 (32-bit, e.g., 192.168.1.1), IPv6 (128-bit, e.g., 2001:0db8::1).
  • Usage: Routes packets across networks via routers.

Port Number (Transport Layer)

  • Purpose: Identifies specific processes or services on a device.
  • Range: 0–65535 (e.g., 80 for HTTP, 443 for HTTPS).
  • Usage: Allows multiple applications to use the network simultaneously.
