What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

• A school evaluation typically includes IQ testing, academic testing, language testing by the speech & language pathologist, and motor testing by the occupational therapist.

​

• A neuropsychological evaluation will include the above, but will also include further testing around memory, attention, and other areas that are important for learning.

What should I expect?

• The neuropsychologist should interview you in order to get a HISTORY.
• The neuropsychologist should obtain OBSERVATIONS from important people in the child’s life, such as teachers.
• The neuropsychologist will perform TESTING, which will generally require 4-6 hours of time with your child.
• The neuropsychologist will give you feedback, including a written report.

How Does Neuropsychological Testing Relate to the IEP Process?

• Neuropsychological tests are usually performed by someone outside of the school system. They may be privately paid for by the family, or the school district can contract for them.
• The findings from the evaluation must be reviewed and responded to by the school district, but the district is not mandated to implement them.
• It is important to work with a neuropsychologist who will communicate and collaborate with the school district.

How Does Neuropsychological Testing Relate to the IEP Process?
