Working Group Aims

• What would you like the group to do?
• Comparing models is an important aim, can be facilitated by a group like this (similar model scales). Scenario-specific? Test model types?
• Evaluation too - data comparison, interface with reality (how?)
• What is appropriate at what scales
• Model integration
• Feeding qualitative information into models
• What is missing from the aims?
• What we are applying models to - developing new scenarios, missing scenario elements (e.g. land grabbing) (different WG?)
• Reaching out to other geographical areas, broadening reach of group (advertising more in GLP/AIMES should help)
• Scenarios for particular world regions
• Identify funding opportunities, especially those that cover under-represented areas
• What aims, topics, themes should we prioritise?
• Cross-scale drivers of change
• Modelling institutions, lock-ins, leverage points…

• We need to pursue funding to actually do things. Future Earth, Belmont Forum, foundation funding - shortage of worldwide collaborative grants.

• Webinars: present papers, new papers coming on board to keep the community updated with state-of-the art, topical (e.g., connecting ABMs to other models)
• Regularity and substantial discussion would be beneficial
• Workshops: a discussion of a variety of different types
• Some that could get new users up and going
• Tutorial based�
• What is missing from the aims?
• Focus. Reduce the number of aims, remove the general aims that many different groups are pursuing
• Lack of understanding what this working group is particularly about
• One suggestion to emphasize on behaviour and model coupling

Empirical evidence, data challenges,

​

• Difficult to find empirical evidence to use in integrating/coupling social models with biophysical
• Difficult to integrate geographical social differences into models
• Lack of data on management impact on vegetation
• Would be useful to compare approaches used to learn e.g. using historical datasets used to evaluate model results
• Prioritise:
• Motivate development of sets of common data against which to compare and benchmark human behaviour models and modelling approaches in land systems;
• Stimulate experiments that use and compare different models of land user/manager decision processes based on alternative theories; ->
• How? Sharing of work underway by short presentations & discussion/mini-symposium

- Carsten: make need clearer to ESM community

- Mark: unrealistic transitions when behaviroural process are not considered. Main ones: time lags

- Jonathan: spreading dynamics (contagion/learning/social tipping) of agricultural practices. LPJml => ESM. Technosphere constraints
