TRADE IRRITANTS
Two items on the Americans’ wish list
The Online Streaming Act forces Canadian and international streaming services with significant Canadian revenue ($25 million or more) to support Canadian content through an extra 5 per cent tax, and it seeks to ensure Canadian music and stories are easily found through the services.
The Online News Act aims to force search large digital platforms like Google and Meta to pay Canadian news organizations for using their content. (Meta blocked links on Facebook and Instagram because it didn’t way to pay, while Google paid $100 million to a media fund to be exempted from the law for five years).
