Origins

  • Began sometime after 1750- evolved over a long period of time
  • Agricultural revolution of the 18th century-increased food production and lowered prices
  • Increase in population- more labor for factories
  • Good supply of capital and wealthy people to invest in new technology
  • Ample supply of mineral sources like iron ore and coal
  • British empire allowed for the free flow of goods

Technological Changes

  • The cotton industry- new inventions such as Edmund Cartwright’s power loom produced more cotton at a faster rate
  • The steam engine- 1760s- James Watt created an engine powered by steam- increased cotton production
  • The iron industry- found new ways of smelting iron- Henry Cort developed a process to produce a higher quality iron called wrought iron.

A Revolution in Transportation

  • Between 1760 and 1840s- roads and canals were constructed to transport goods
  • 1804- Richard Trevithick pioneered the first steam powered locomotive- 5mph
  • Within 20 years, locomotives reached 50 mph
  • Bridges were built and people were soon able to use them for transportation

The Industrial Factory

  • Originally a product of cotton demands
  • Used for organizing labor and increasing production
  • Created regular hours and shifts (agriculture does not demand this)
  • Adults were fined for misbehaving while children were beaten

  • 1851- British hosted the world’s first industrial fair in the Crystal palace- contained 100,000 exhibits from all over the world
  • 6 million visited in 6 months
  • Organized by Prince Albert of Great Britain- wanted to modernize Great Britain
