  • Zechariah means ”one whom Jehovah remembers”;
  • A  common name, ~ 30 others of the same name in the O.T.
  • Like Jeremiah and Ezekiel, he was a priest as well as a prophet, (Nehemiah 12:12, 16).
  • He is called “the son of Berechiah the son of Iddo” (1:1); but simply “the son of Iddo” in (Ezra 5:1; 6:14).
  • Zechariah is given 9 visions that promise the restoration of the city of Jerusalem and the temple, the overthrow of hostile nations, and the eradication of wickedness.

Zechariah 2:10

“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord.

Zechariah 8:3

“Thus says the Lord: ‘I will return to Zion,

And dwell in the midst of Jerusalem.

Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth,

The Mountain of the Lord of hosts, The Holy Mountain.’

And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,

Which faces Jerusalem on the east.

And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,

From east to west,

Making a very large valley;

Half of the mountain shall move toward the north

  • Malachi means “My Angel”
  • Some say that the Author is uncertain as Malachi is the name of an office, rather than a person, “My messenger,” however the common view is that it is a proper name.
  • Malachi was from the tribe of Zebulon and died at a young age
  • Malachi forms the transition link between the Old and the New Testaments, ‘the skirt and boundary of Christianity” [Tertullian].
  • After him there was no Prophet in Israel till the coming of Christ
