Censorship and ‘The Five Pillars of Food Safety’

by Dr. Shiv Chopra

In common parlance, the term censorship is defined as limiting access to information to the general public. What happens when the relevant information concerns certain commercial products of questionable safety and the censorship authorities are government departments,

such as Health Canada, Agriculture Canada, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, etc., and the beneficiaries of same are private corporations? Such is the case concerning five products, including hormones, antibiotics, slaughterhouse waste, pesticides and genetically modified organisms, going into the nation's food supply. The irony of it is that not even the Supreme Court of Canada is willing to address this issue of presumably the greatest public interest. If this is not censorship to the extreme, what is? Let the public be the judge.

Health Canada's lack of rigorous safety review is the real outrage

by Peter Biesterfeld | July 27, 2015

According to former Health Canada drug evaluator Shiv Chopra the real outrage is that "Health Canada is violating its own Food and Drugs Act by playing fast and loose with drug approvals, allowing drug manufacturers to regulate themselves," and not insisting on 'rigorous safety reviews' as Ambrose claimed.

For Chopra the outrage is that 15 years after he and two fellow scientists, Margaret Haydon and Gérard Lambert blew the whistle on their Health Canada bosses for licensing drugs of questionable safety, nothing has changed.

The Supreme Court of Canada recently ruled that medical marijuana users have the right not to have to smoke their medicine. Bring on the pot-infused cookies, lozenges, oils and teas. For some conditions alternative cannabis treatment is more effective and less risky than inhaling. Until the SCC ruling it was a criminal offence for medical users to ingest pot in any other form than dry leaf.

Wellness custodian of the land, Health Minister Rona Ambrose was "outraged" by the ruling.

"Marijuana has never gone through the regulatory approval process at Health Canada, which requires rigorous safety reviews and clinical trials with scientific evidence," said Ambrose. "So frankly, I'm outraged by the Supreme Court."

Hamilton: Women's group leaders have issues with police chief

Leaders of the women's community say their relationship with Hamilton's police chief is broken.

The chief says no, it's not.

This disagreement has been brewing almost since Glenn De Caire became chief nearly five years ago. But it has boiled over now that the police board recently voted to extend his contract for at least another two years. That decision has led directors of some high-profile women's agencies to say he's going to have to work at repairing his relationship with them.

His approach to domestic violence, his commitment to fixing the gaps in service for victims and — most of all — his willingness to come to the table and collaborate have been called into question.

"I want a chief who cares," says Clare Freeman, executive director of Interval House, a shelter for women and children.

The One House, Many Nations Campaign

Housing is a basic human right, a foundation to sustain a healthy, productive, and dignified life. However, due to a series of past and present Federal government policy decisions to move towards austerity rather than address housing, the governments have cut back on housing programs. As a result, Turtle Island (Canada) is experiencing a growing housing crisis that encompasses all people; it’s particularly affecting Indigenous women.

Alternatively, for Indigenous peoples housing is a Treaty term and promise that is continuously violated through funding cuts and funding caps. Currently, there has not been a housing increase for over 20 years. Housing on each reserve has been in crisis for a very long time contributing to “fourth world” conditions.

A healthy, productive and dignified home brings life and joy to families. We are not waiting for the Federal government to fulfill Treaty terms and promises; Indigenous children and their parents need immediate housing repairs and houses. We are hoping to build or repair one house at a time. In time, we hope to grow so that we can reach all Nations.

This is where we need you.

Fluoridation Chemical Company Fined $2 Billion

NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The company that gets rid of highly toxic wastes by selling them as a "product" to municipal water departments across the country as cheap fluoridation chemicals has been fined $2 billion for gross violations of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), reports the Fluoride Action Network (FAN).

Mosaic Fertilizer, LLC, is one of the largest sellers of a toxic fluoride chemical, "fluorosilicic acid", that cities add to public drinking water. Fluorosilicic acid is described by EPA in the Consent Decrees as a "hazardous waste" produced at Mosaic's fertilizer plants. More than 200 million Americans drink these wastes every day.

In 1934 Parliament brought down the “Bank of Canada Act” to create a central federal bank, the Bank of Canada. Prior to this private banks ran Canada's banking system. From 1938 until 1974 the Bank of Canada operated as a publicly owned corporation. Under this Act, the Federal government was allowed to borrow for special projects or lend to the provinces, over 30% of their annual budget that must be paid within a year. Note: Canada is the only G8 country to have a central public bank.

Using the Bank of Canada model, our WWII debts were paid way ahead of other countries. From 1938 to 1974 the Bank of Canada funded highways, railroads, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and many hospitals and universities with no interest.

In 1974, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau led government decided to ignore the 'Bank of Canada Act' and start borrowing from the International Banking System, including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Canadian private Banks. This policy has been continued by Finance Ministers since that time resulting in interest charges of $28 to $50 Billion each year since 1974. Ironically, the Bank of Canada Act is still on the books but being ignored. It is suggested that it is being left there, in case the World Banking system collapses and the government will have something to fall back on.

If the Bank of Canada Act were followed, then austerity plans would be a mute point and large projects would be possible to create jobs, boost our economy and get us out of debt.

A group of citizen's (COMER) represented by Toronto lawyer Rocco Galati filed a motion in 2011, against the Federal government to adhere to the 'Bank of Canada Act' and has won two appeals. In 2015 it was given a go ahead to proceed and is headed for a Supreme Court showdown.

Ironically the mainstream media and our 2015 election was and is silent on this issue except for a handful of articles. This is very telling in a so called democratic society. The Banking Cartel has long arms and we are talking about huge figures to the tune of 1.1 trillion dollars of interest we have unnecessarily paid since 1974 and counting.

So what will PM elect Justin Trudeau do about it? Stay tuned. Eyes wide shut. Justin does not even admit that it is happening at the moment.

Canadians deserve better than to be held ransom year after year by the Banking Cabal and government partners in crime. Justice for All!

Whistleblower slams TPP deal that allows milk

from hormone treated cows into Canada (CBC Audio: 6 min)

There are worries that the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal means milk from hormone treated U.S. cows could end up in Canadian supermarkets.

Shiv Chopra is a former Health Canada scientist who lost his job after raising the alarm about dangers posed by bovine growth hormone (BGH). Partially because of his work, it is currently illegal to use the drug to boost milk production in Canada.

Chopra tells As It Happens host Carol Off, "We worked upon it so much and got [bovine growth hormone] rejected in Canada...Now, under the trade agreement, it's going to let the flood-gates open."

TPP negotiators have told CBC that Canadian health and safety regulations will apply to all imported products. But that does not mean dairy producers in the U.S. have to follow the same rules Canadian farms do.

There are fewer restrictions on hormone use on U.S. cows.

According to Chopra, "The damage that occurs to the milk, to the cows, ultimately it translates into human health hazards. As a result, you not only get the BGH but also an insulin growth-like hormone that causes cancer."

Even with new labelling, Chopra believes Canadian consumers won't fully know where their milk is sourced.

"Taking Back Kanada" Lecture by Dr. Pam Palmatar (75 min)

Canada is in a state of emergency and if we don’t act now, irreparable harm will be done to the environment, the economy, and the basic democratic and human rights of Canadians. The persistent failure by successive governments to address the ill effects of past and current oppression of Indigenous peoples threatens the well-being of all Canadians. The health and well-being (or lack thereof) of First Nations is a strong indicator of the health of Canada. Canada simply can’t exist without its land defenders. First Nations are Canada’s last best hope at saving the lands, waters, plants and animals for our collective future generations. The real power in any nation is in the people and Canadians, in solidarity with First Nations, have the power to take back Canada and restore the original treaty vision of mutual respect, protection and prosperity.

TTIP: Might is Right (49 min)

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, is a free trade agreement currently under negotiations between Europe and the United States. As shown in the insightful new documentary TTIP: Might is Right, this agreement has stirred a great deal of controversy and protest among the masses, and for good reason.

Canada. In 1992, the country signed onto the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States, and the unexpected repercussions of that agreement are still being felt by residents after well over two decades. As evidenced by one such consequence portrayed in the film, the ISDS clause has permitted the practice of unregulated fracking right in the backyards of unsuspecting citizens. Their protests are largely met by deaf ears, because the energy companies who host the fracking enterprises have the authority to sue the country if they feel their business model is under attack. Canada has reason to feel squeamish about interfering with corporate interests or enforcing regulations upon them; since the passing of NAFTA, they have become one of the five most frequently sued countries in the world.

Whistleblowers In Canada To Receive $1.5 Million

For Exposing Corporate Crimes

Whistleblowers in Canada could receive awards in excess of $1.5 million after a formal policy was unveiled last week by the Ontario Securities Commission to encourage those in the know to help ferret out corporate wrongdoing.

Canada’s largest securities regulator initially capped proposed awards at $1.5 million. But Tom Atkinson, the OSC’s director of enforcement, said last Monday the awards could be larger in some cases, notably if more than $10 million was collected.

Why Trudeau was right not to appoint a

First Nations minister of Indigenous Affairs

The worst thing that could happen for the promised nations-to-nation relationship is if Prime Minister Trudeau appointed a First Nation person as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC).

However, outside of considerations of governance, Crown representatives are always Crown representatives. They are there to protect the interests of the Crown. They may have been elected by a specific constituency and can represent them politically or advocate on their behalf, but cabinet ministers are "Ministers of the Crown." Therefore, even the Minister of AANDC is there to represent, first and foremost, the interests of the Crown -- whether the person is First Nation or not.

Netanyahu absolves Hitler while Canada's

main Jewish organizations stay silent

Using words that would have destroyed the political career of any mainstream North American, or western European leader, Netanyahu said the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin Al-Husseini convinced Hitler to gas European Jewry. "Hitler didn't want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews. And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said: 'If you expel them, they'll all come here [to Palestine].'" Hitler, according to Netanyahu, then asked: "What should I do with them?" with the mufti allegedly replying: "Burn them."

The Centre for Israel Jewish Affairs (CIJA), B'nai Brith and other Canadian Holocaust organizations have stayed silent in the face of Netanyahu's ridiculous effort to blame Palestinians for Nazi crimes. While telling, this silence not surprising. These groups aggressively backed the outgoing Harper regime despite government officials repeatedly minimizing the Nazi Holocaust.

Naomi Klein to Trudeau: Welcome, now let's LEAP to work on the climate

Naomi Klein's welcoming gift to the Trudeau government was a rally of over 1,000 people calling for a transition to a just and green economy outside the Vancouver Convention Centre Thursday.

The Canada is Ready for the Leap Rally took place outside the CUPE National Convention. It called on the new government to adopt principles outlined in the Leap Manifesto, an online document authored by 60 Canadian progressives, Klein among them, asking for social and climate justice.

"We don't just want green jobs, we want green jobs that are unionized and pay a living wage," Klein said to a sea of CUPE flags waving in front of her.

The manifesto was released on September 15, right in the middle of an election Campaign.

Chris Hedges: The TPP is the Most Brazen

Corporate Power Grab in American History

The release Thursday of the 5,544-page text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership—a trade and investment agreement involving 12 countries comprising nearly 40 percent of global output—confirms what even its most apocalyptic critics feared.

“The TPP, along with the WTO [World Trade Organization] and NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement], is the most brazen corporate power grab in American history,” Ralph Nader told me when I reached him by phone in Washington, D.C. “It allows corporations to bypass our three branches of government to impose enforceable sanctions by secret tribunals. These tribunals can declare our labor, consumer and environmental protections [to be] unlawful, non-tariff barriers subject to fines for noncompliance. The TPP establishes a transnational, autocratic system of enforceable governance in defiance of our domestic laws.”

Remembrance Day should also confront Canada's colonial past

On Remembrance Day what is it we are supposed to remember? The valour, sacrifice and glory of soldiers -- and no more?

What about the victims of Canadian troops? Should we abandon the search for truth and learning from our past on this day that is supposedly devoted to remembering?

Why not a diversity of recollection? An honest accounting of what really happened and why -- isn't that the best way to remember?

As Canada's Prime Minister Robert Borden saw it, the fight was "to put forth every effort and to make every sacrifice necessary to ensure the integrity and maintain the honour of our empire."

To honour Canada's diversity, how about this year we remember some of the victims of that empire?

Canada Under Trudeau: Liberal Revival or Liberal Obamanation?

After ridding the country of Stephen Harper’s toxic dictatorship, the electorate is now divided over what, exactly, to make of Justin Trudeau’s new Liberal government. Optimists believe that it represents a return to a sane, humane Canada whereas pessimists think it will generally hearken unto the same corporatist cabal that Harper did. To some degree Trudeau’s victory is analogous to Barack Obama’s presidential victory in 2008 after the end of the Bush error… er, era. A short analysis of the expectation, election and fallout of the U.S.’s first black president provides useful insight into what’s in store for Canada.

On Justin Trudeau’s Lack of Diversity by Yves Engler

Trudeau unveils most diverse Cabinet in Canada’s history”, was how one media outlet described the new Liberal cabinet. It includes a Muslim woman, four Sikhs, an indigenous woman, two differently abled individuals and an equal number of women and men. Half even refused any reference to God at Wednesday’s swearing in ceremony.

But in one respect there was no diversity at all. Every single person wore a Remembrance Day poppy. Even Justin Trudeau’s young kids were made to publicly commemorate Canadians (and allies) who died at war.

On Remembrance Day what is it we are supposed to remember? The valour, sacrifice and glory of soldiers — and no more?

What about the victims of Canadian troops? Should we abandon the search for truth and learning from our past on this day that is supposedly devoted to remembering?

Quebec Bets on Internet Blocking:

New Bill Mandates ISP Blocking of Gambling Websites

The Government of Quebec has introduced new legislation that requires Internet service providers to block access to unlicensed online gambling sites. The provisions are contained in an omnibus bill implementing elements of the government’s spring budget, which included a promise to establish website blocking requirements. “The Société des loteries du Québec shall oversee the accessibility of online gambling. It shall draw up a list of unauthorized online gambling sites and provide the list to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux, which shall send it to Internet service providers by registered mail.“

Justin Trudeau and the Canadian Military-Industrial Complex

A Conversation with Richard Sanders. Global Research News Hour Episode 121

In a feature length interview for this week’s Global Research News Hour, Sanders takes a deeper look at Canada’s role in militarism and military profiteering. He discusses the contract to sell armoured vehicles to human rights scofflaw Saudi Arabia, and the recent discovery of Russian-made arms being shipped illegally by Canada to the Kurds. He addresses the parties’ disappointing commitment to maintaining or increasing military spending, even among the supposedly progressive NDP and Green parties. He talks about how the decade old election-financing law may have strengthened the influence of military companies like Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics in Ottawa. And he proposes a theory as to why the anti-war movements in Canada and around the world have proven to be such a dismal failure when it comes to confronting the increasing militarization of foreign policy.

Richard Sanders is the coordinator of the Ottawa-based Coalition Opposed to the Arms Trade, and editor of its magazine, Press For Conversion. For more information visit http://coat.ncf.ca

A question on torture for Canada's new defense minister

Sajjan, in stark contrast to such milquetoast predecessors as Jason Kenney and Peter MacKay, was hailed as "some kind of next-level Spy vs Spy war hero" who'd done three tours in Afghanistan and was praised by his superiors as "the best single Canadian intelligence asset in [the Afghan war] theater."

Despite all the puff pieces, Sajjan's presence in his new job may open a can of worms that former PM Harper thought was pretty much sealed shut when he prorogued Parliament in 2009 to avoid stinging questions about Canadian complicity in the torture of Afghan detainees.

Sajjan's tours as a key Canadian asset and liaison with torture-tainted Afghan authorities dovetailed with an era when significant human rights concerns had been quietly raised by Canada's foreign affairs representatives, including a 2005 Canadian report that noted Afghanistan's "military, intelligence and police forces have been involved in arbitrary arrests, kidnapping, extortion, torture and extrajudicial killing of criminal suspects."

In wealthy Canada, hunger is rapidly growing: food bank report

More than 850,000 Canadians rely on food banks each month to put food on the table − a figure that has gone up by 26% since 2008, according to the 2015 Hunger Count report released by Food Banks Canada today.

Anti-poverty groups are calling it unacceptable to have such high levels of food insecurity in a nation as wealthy as Canada and are calling on the government to address poverty as a matter of priority.

“In a country as wealthy as Canada it can be difficult for some to fully understand the realities of the experience of food insecurity” Canada Without Poverty said in a release. “For those who have not had to skip meals so that their children can eat or who haven’t had to live off the last bag of rice for a week until they can make another trip to the food bank, it can be hard to grasp this everyday struggle.”

Ill-informed first words on Ukraine by Canada's new prime minister

CBC cites Trudeau speaking of his exchange with Putin: "I pointed out that although Canada has shifted its approach on a broad range of multilateral and international issues, we remain committed to the fact that Russia's interference in Ukraine must cease; that we stand with the Ukrainian people and expect the president to engage fully in the Minsk peace process."

The reference to the Minsk ceasefire agreement of Feb 12, 2015 (Minsk-2) is ill-informed or malevolent. Russia was a key international sponsor and negotiator of the agreement, along with Germany and France. Canada and the United States were nowhere to be seen or heard from. The agreement was effectively a refutation of the aggressive egging-on of Kyiv's civil war in which the U.S., Canada and Britain have engaged ever since Kyiv launched its civil war -- "Anti-Terrorist Operation" -- in eastern Ukraine in April 2014.

The monarch is at the apex of the Canadian order of precedence and, as the embodiment of the state, is also the locus of oaths of allegiance,[n 15][85][91][103][104] required of many of the aforementioned employees of the Crown

Voting in Canada is and always was a deception

Those running for election may ask you to vote for them as your representative but once they take the Oath “I, [name], do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors. So help me God.” they do not and cannot represent anyone but the Queen/Crown. The Parliament and the Legislatures only exist to benefit the Queen/Crown.

The body of the reigning sovereign thus holds two distinct personas in constant coexistence: that of a natural-born human being and that of the state as accorded to him or her through law; the Crown and the monarch are “conceptually divisible but legally indivisible … [t]he office cannot exist without the office-holder”

Climate warning labels are coming to gas pumps in one Canadian city

The North Vancouver, B.C., city council unanimously voted this week to make warning labels mandatory on all gas pumps, although it’s not yet clear what the labels will look like, CityLab reports:

The city council is considering designs that “deliver key messages or ‘prompts’ as reminders of positive, can-do actions people can take to reduce GHG emissions.” These might be suggestions like buying an electric vehicle, trading in an old car for a $1,360 transit pass, and saving fuel by keeping tires properly inflated. There might also be facts about greenhouse gases, such as “Burning fossil fuel contributes to climate change” or “49% of GHG emissions in the City of North

Vancouver are from transportation.”

The latter approach is closer to the vision of Robert Shirkey, whose environmental group Our Horizon pushed hard for the labels. Concepts drawn up by Our Horizon are a bit more in-your-face about drivers’ personal responsibility, proposing images like a sad, presumably unhealthy child.

The Best is Yet to Come Debate - Munk Debate / CBC Ideas (59 min)

"Be it resolved that humankind's best days lie ahead."

That was the proposition of the Munk Debate on Progress. The evening at Toronto's Roy Thompson Hall was filled with argument and personal attacks -- but also humour.

The audience was asked to vote at the beginning and again at the end of the debate -- the winning team is the one that manages to move the biggest percentage of votes.

The tawdry fall of the Postmedia newspaper empire

Postmedia is a national media giant with nearly 200 papers, magazines and websites. Its dailies reach 6.3 million Canadian readers every week, with some of its best-known papers including the National Post, Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Regina Leader-Post, Winnipeg Sun, The London Free Press, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette.

But Postmedia is also a ship taking on water, due to both self-inflicted and industry-wide wounds.

Of the self-inflicted variety, Postmedia was pilloried last month in the run-up to the federal election after its Toronto executives ordered 16 of its major daily newspapers to run editorials endorsing Stephen Harper. (Postmedia did the same thing last spring during Alberta’s provincial election, forcing its papers there to back Jim Prentice’s Tories).

Canada's deluded wars of November by MATTHEW BEHRENS

Like most nations, whenever Canada trains for and goes to war, it's all about those nice window-dressing items of values, democracy, selfless honour, women's rights, saving cute puppies, and that old chestnut, tradition. We've always done it, we always will, end of story. Never do you hear a Canadian leader being upfront about why we have a military in the first place: to protect our economic investments abroad, to dole out massive corporate welfare to multinational war profiteers, and to repress the population at home -- especially Indigenous nations -- should we ever become too restless.

It's pretty much heresy among people of all political stripes to write and say these things in a country that so idolizes its institutions of violence, from the Canadian Forces and the RCMP to CSIS and the highly paid police officer on the beat, none of whom make the lists of most dangerous jobs in Canada.

Nine Algonquin chiefs, AFNQL oppose 'Zibi'

condos and resolve to protect sacred area

Chaudière Falls area, Ottawa/Gatineau — On November 19, the Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador passed a resolution brought forward by Algonquin chiefs to protect the sacred Akikodjiwan falls site on the Ottawa river (Kichizibi), unceded Algonquin territory.

This is in opposition to Windmill Development Group Ltd’s plans, in partnership with Dream Corp, to build a condominium/commercial development named ‘Zibi’ (an Algonquin word meaning river) on the islands at the waterfalls and on the Gatineau shoreline.

Also, Hydro Ottawa has recently started development on a new hydroelectric generating facility at the dammed falls.

Canada needs a radical change to its Syria strategy now

Canada's position so far has echoed America's. Given the threat ISIS poses to people globally, it needs to be tackled first. This choice also, of course, has to do with the fact that taking on Assad would essentially mean taking on Iran and its great military prowess, Hezbollah -- with Russia close behind.

But airstrikes on ISIS are clearly not working. Not only is ISIS very much still alive and well, as we saw in the attacks on Beirut, Paris and Mali, but the coalition is striking the wrong targets. According to data from Airwars, a monitoring project by a team of independent journalists, Western coalition attacks have actually killed almost 700 civilians, including 100 children.

Clearly, it's time for a new approach.

Canada’s New Climate-Denying National Government

The new government has played coy with the latest and largest-yet international trade and investment agreement cooked up by the large imperialist governments, the Trans Pacific Partnership. The TPP joins other such agreements in tearing down restrictions on the unfettered movement of global capital. It is sharply condemned by progressive forces in Canada, including many unions.

The Globe and Mail reported on November 18 that the new, Liberal government is “taking an officially neutral position on the [TPP deal], arguing that it needs time to allow for the consultations they promised during the recent election.” But Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland tweeted on Nov 27, “Looking forward to working together and increasing Canadian trade opportunities with Asia!”

An Open Letter From Furlong's Accusers to Prime Minister Trudeau

John Furlong's accusers are asking the federal government to listen to them.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and two cabinet ministers, Cathy Woodgate and seven others who say Furlong abused them as children call for Trudeau to ask Furlong to step down from Own the Podium, a government-created and government-funded non-profit sports organization. John Furlong is the chair of its board of directors.

Woodgate et. al call the organization "Share the Podium" in their letter, a change which was made deliberately, CANADALAND is told.

Five of the undersigned have also written sworn affidavits detailing the abuse they say they endured. None of their claims have been tested in court and Furlong has denied all allegations.

CANADALAND presents the open letter, in full:
