A contour is defined as a shared edge where two forms meet.
Remember :
Blind contour drawings
are those that are executed while looking only at an object of study and not at the page on which the image is being drawn.
Images created using this technique are, by nature of the process, highly distorted and inaccurate, but very expressive.

Modified Contour
Modified contour drawings
are similar to blind contour drawings in that the artist's hand moves only while observing an object of study.
During modified contour drawings you may periodically suspend the action of drawing to examine the image to limit the amount of distortion.

Modified Contour Drawing
Concept:
Like blind contour drawing, modified contour drawing allows you to take quick glances at the drawing.
Notice positions, relationships of sizes, lengths, and angles.
Monitor line direction and proportion .
Continue the slow, intense observation of the subject.

Place a piece of paper on a table and tape it down.
You are going to draw our own hand again.
Arrange your hand in a complex position – fingers entwined, clenched, crossed, or holding something.

Studio:
Take a single position and stay there.
Stare at your hand in preparation to draw.
Find a space, perhaps between the fingers. Gaze at that space until you see the edge of the space where it meets the edge of the finger.

Studio:
As your eyes move slowly along the contour, your pencil draws the contour on the paper at the same slow speed.
Move from contour to adjacent contour. Do not draw a complete outline and then try to draw the interior forms.
It’s much easier to move from form to adjacent form.

Studio:
Glance at your paper only to check positions or relationships.
For 90% of your drawing time, your eyes should be focused on the hand you are drawing.
DO NOT DRAW WHILE LOOKING AT THE PAPER!!!
ONLY DRAW WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT YOUR HAND!!!

Reflection:
Review in your mind the drawing strategies you used.
How did you consciously shift your mind into a spatial state of thinking and seeing?
Did you feel the shift?
What conditions facilitated the shift?
