What’s a hackathon?

(We talked about this on one of our verrrry first days of class)

  • A hackathon is pretty much a coding marathon (see what they did there?)
  • For coders and others involved in product design (content creators, graphic designers, product managers, UX designers, etc)
  • Goal is to build, create, produce, and deliver a product in a short amount of time

Mini-Hackathon: Holiday wish list

  • Today, we’ll do a mini-hackathon! Using everything you’ve learned so far, you’ll each build your own holiday wish list
  • What if I don’t finish?!
    • That’s ok! That’s how hackathons work! You keep working til the end
  • What if I finish early?!
    • Keep spicing it up! See if you can figure out how to change the CSS
    • If enough folks finish early, we’ll invite you to present your work
  • You’ll have the rest of class to work independently
    • Volunteers will be in your breakout rooms to answer questions
    • There will be additional empty breakout rooms if you prefer to discuss 1-1

Project Guidelines

  • Throw reality out the window! Get creative! Put fun things on your list even if they aren’t realistic ; )
  • Your wish list web page should include...
    • An updated title
    • A header that tells us what the heck this web page is
    • A list
    • At least 3 images (moving or still)
    • At least 3 links
  • If you want to get fancy/spicy...
    • See if you can NEST any of the images within your list...
    • Use CSS to change the style of an element or two, if you can figure out how… (hint: Google is your friend)
