Finding out if IB is right for you.

  • IB shall be accessible to all for whom it will benefit.
  • If students feel a strong match with IB at Hvitfeldtska, based on our profile and mission statement, we want them to have the opportunity to study here. We want them to feel at home during their time here.

Be sure to explore our website, reach out to our IB student ambassadors, come and visit.

  • Our own research shows us those that do ”feel at home” and succeed best come to us with a strong academic foundation.
  • There is a strong correlation between a great Diploma result and students who had at least 250 points from grade 9.

  • Other systems can be compared to the Swedish system similarly.

Swedish grading system-compulsory school final grades

The final grades come from the 17 Best final grades from final year in compulsory school. Or, it can be the top 16 grades if the student didn’t study modern foreign language.

A=20 B=17.5 C=15 D=12 E=10 F=0

The highest possible points are 340 (with 17 grades) or 320 (with 16 grades)

We have found that students who are performing above average, also in MYP, tend to enjoy and succeed the most in the program.

Testing

  • Testing is partially
    • To verify what we see in the grades (a required part of the application)
    • To see how a student, on the spot, attempts reasoning and problem solving
    • To see how a student communicates a solution to a problem.

Assessment Criteria:

    • Reasoning and problem solving
    • Mathematical application and accuracy
    • Communication and presentation
    • Creativity and Feasibility of proposed solution

14 of 17

Testing

  • Part 1: Basic operations. ”Warm up”. About 15 minutes.
    • Use of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using integrers, decimals, fractions, including order of operations
    • Calculation of percent, ratio, or proportion
    • Factors and multiples
    • Rearranging formulae

  • Part 2: Solving a real life problem. About 45 min- 1 hour.

A real-life problem will be described and the student’s task is to propose a solution to the problem using mathematical reasoning. The student will be free to use whatever mathematical models and calculations they wish, to come to a proposed solution that addresses the original problem. All calculations and work must be shown.

The task is finished by presenting the solution in written communication: a simple proposal of how they would go about solving the problem that was presented.

Example

You want to throw a party and you have a budget of _____sek.

Refer to the catering menu to see what options you have for food and drink to order, and what they cost.

Refer to the entertainment options and costs.

How are you going to throw the most entertaining party for the most people, and stay within your budget?

Justify your solutions mathematically.

This will inevitably lead to the student needing to

  • Define variables
  • Model with expressions or even equations
  • Decide whether to use graphs, tables, or equations
  • Compare options mathematically

Write a proposal to explain how you will solve the“problem” (or opportunity, really).
