First Day Procedures

  • BEGIN REGULAR ROUTINES ON THE FIRST DAY
  • Apple Name Tag: Please check the spelling of your child’s name and add/check their a.m. and p.m. transportation. If there is anything that is incorrect, please send me an email or put a note in your child’s take home folder. It is important to have your child wear their apple name tag to school the WHOLE FIRST WEEK.
  • Bus Schedule: Check the HCPSS website. See an administrator or front office staff with any questions or concerns. Please be sure to notify me

and the front and the office with

any transportation changes

throughout the year and daily.

Transportation

  • Walkers- parents will meet children outside of front door area.
  • Car riders-please line up in the car loop and your child will be released to you by a staff member. Please stay in your car.
  • Bus riders-practice your bus number at home. Take a drive with your child so they can recognize his/her stop. Refer to the bus schedule for arrival time to your neighborhood.

Canvas / Grading

  • We will use the Canvas gradebook as a tool, but not exclusively.

Other tasks and anecdotal observations will also be used to determine students’ overall progress and grades, such as: classwork, journal entries, participation, and discussions.

  • We will utilize the Canvas Inbox or announcements to share links or reminders. Please make sure you have notifications from Canvas announcements sent to your inbox.�
  • The Canvas app is a very helpful tool parents can use to track student progress and receive announcements.

New Kindergarten Readiness Assessment

Renaissance Star Assessments will be administered to all Kindergarten students Fall 2025. This assessment is computer-based and adaptive based on how the student scores on the preceding questions.

When is it given? During the first few weeks of school (August-October 10th)

What is assessed? Early literacy and math skills as well as an observational assessment of social and emotional development .

Information regarding your child's performance will be shared at parent teachers conferences in November.

Lunch

  • Breakfast $2.00 and Milk $.50
  • Lunch $2.80. Your child will have a number they will need to use to purchase lunch with money that has been added to his/her account.
  • Lunch can also be packed.
  • Help teach your child how to open containers to foster independence.
  • There is a peanut free table for allergies only.
  • Lunch volunteers are needed the first week or two.

Recess:

  • Weather Appropriate Clothing
    • Gloves and hats in winter. Please label items.
    • Students will go outside unless the temperature drops below 20 degrees with wind chill. Please make sure you dress your child appropriately.

  • One small snack packed separate from your child’s lunch.
  • Bottle of water labeled with their name
  • Please no nuts or peanut products

When to stay home and what to do.

Your child MUST stay home if….

❏ They have had a fever of 100* or higher within the last 24 hours.

❏ They have vomited within the last 24 hours.

❏ They have had diarrhea within the last 24 hours. If your child is absent….

❏ Please email your child’s teacher and HSESabsence@hcpss.org

❏ If your child is absent, they will have time to make up assignments

students will have lunch before going home. Or as we call it in Kindergarten “brunch.”

Weather Related Closings

It’s really comin’ down out there….

  • There have been instances where schools close early due to weather--snow, hurricane…PLEASE make sure your emergency transportation portion is filled out And up to date in Family File.
  • School and teachers do not call parents. Students may not wait for pick up. Have a plan in place. If there is a change, please call the front office to ensure that we know of the change.

About Friday

  • Open House begins at 10:00 am . We will have activities for the students in the classroom while you stay in the lunchroom and get information from Administration and the PTA.
  • When you come to the room:
      • If you have them, bring your child’s supplies with items labeled. If you need a list please ask me before leaving or on Friday.
      • Have your child show you around the room or introduce you to a new friend.
