5TH GRADE-UNIT 3-C.B 52-53
The muscular system is made up of all the MUSCLES in our body. Most of them produce the movements that we make.
MUSCLES
-They are elastic organs.
-They contract in response to orders they receive from the nervous system.
-When they stop receiving the order, they return to their original size.
CONTRACT
RELAX
-SKELETAL MUSCLES:
they are the muscles of
the muscular system.
-Many muscles are attached
to the bones by TENDONS.
Tendons are bands of very
strong tissue.
Skeletal muscles can be different shapes:
long, short, circular and flat.
-LONG: they have narrow ends
and the part in the middle is wider.
-SHORT: the ones in the hands and feet.
-CIRCULAR: they are shaped like
a ring(eye and mouth muscles)
-FLAT: they are like a sheet (in the abdomen)
THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM
-We have about 65o skeletal muscles.
-They are distributed
throughout the body
in three parts:
HEAD, TRUNK
and LIMBS
HEAD MUSCLES
-Flat and circular in our head.
-We use them for speaking,
chewing and for
facial expressions.
TRUNK MUSCLES
-Large, flat muscles.
-They support the backbone
and help it to bend.
-Our abdominal muscles
protect the organs in the
abdomen and help us
to breathe.
LIMBS MUSCLES
-There are many long muscles in our limbs.
-They move our arms and legs, hands and feet.
