Maths Planning

Term 3

2 of 6

  1. Discuss the narrative writing that we did during literacy class. What were your stories about? Who/what/where/when? What was the problem? How did you resolve the problem?
  2. We will base your term 3 Hyperstudio Animation on your narrative writing.
  3. Click on the animation planner that is on the maths page. It will open up in Google Drawings.
  4. You can draw your plan straight into the boxes on the page.
  5. Write a short sentence under each drawing to explain what happens in that part of the story.
  6. Do not draw every detail/part of the story. There are only 10 boxes, so make this brief/simple.
  7. When finished, you must publish this on your blog so that you can access your plan during Creative Space.

Week 1 - Hyperstudio Animation

WALT: Create a plan for the term 3 Hyperstudio Animation

3 of 6

  1. Group time: Rulers, chalk, paper measurement print outs
  2. Teach group how to measure in mm’s and cms. Print out a sheet for measuring.. Eg: ‘how long is this line in cm?’
  3. Now measure things in the room: How many cm is the maths book? Your face? Your foot? A pencil. A chair. Your bag.
  4. Now do gestimates. If this is 1cm, then how long do you think this is?
  5. If your pinky is 5cm, how long is your arm?
  6. How many mm is your fingernail? YOur pinky finger? Your shoe? Your big toe?
  7. Chalk outside: Show me 25cm. Show me 15cm. Show me 40cm. Show me 60cm. Show me 100cm.

Inquiry plan for Thursday (reliever in class this day):

  1. Click on ‘space inquiry’ link in red bar on top of your maths page
  2. Complete all slides.
  3. Publish on blog.

This activity builds on what we have learnt so far about the order of the planets in the solar system.

Week 2 - Strand - Measurement

WALT: Measure length using a ruler

WALT: Measure distance in mm’s, cm’s and metres.

Monday:

Taulagi release teacher:

  • Class activity is linked in red bar at top of all group maths pages - labelled ‘geometry’

Tues - Fri:

Continue working on measurement with a ruler in small group time before moving on to using our body to measure things.

  1. Remembering where to begin on the ruler when measuring (the right starting point). Eg: Can you measure this line? -student measures the line, check that they are doing this properly.
  2. The difference between taller, tallest, shorter, shortest.
  3. Measuring with your body! How long is your pinky finger, hand span, arm span, stride. Using these to measure things. Could you use your pinky to measure how long a table is? No, but you could use your arm span. Would you use your hand to measure the length of a pencil.. No, but you can use your pinky.
  4. How many pinky fingers long is my chromebook? How many handspans is my book? How many strides from this door to the other?
  5. The difference in length between objects. How much longer is this pencil (15cm) than this rubber (7cm)..

Next week:

Mm and cm: look at how to measure 1.4 cm and 7.8 cm. What does this look like? What does it mean? - Is this too far ahead for them? Only do this if they’re ready.

Week 3

WALT: Measure cm’s and mm’s using a ruler

WALT: Use our armspan, handspan and stride to measure lengths.

Week 7: Fractions integrated with mult/div.

WALT: Understand how fractions are broken down into smaller fractions

WALT: Share items into equal groups

Fractions Workshops:

  • Working in needs based workshops this week instead of normal maths groups.
  • Word problems - put strategies in context!
  • Students to explain strategies to each other (thinking out loud)

Workshop groups

Materials: Fractions magnets and fractions pieces. Paper and scissors with markers.

  1. Ordering fractions from smallest to biggest.
  2. Using paper and pens and scissors, cut up paper to show the breakdown of fractions (1 - ½ - ¼ - ⅛).
  3. Understand that 1 divided by 2 = ½. ½ divided by 2: ¼, ¼ divided by 2 : ⅛.
  4. ‘If this shaded part of the strip is ⅓, then fraction is the rest?’

2nd session:

  1. Using counters, show me what ½ of 8 looks like
  2. Using counters, show me what ¼ of 16 looks like
  3. Show me what ⅓ looks like (break the counters into equal groups)
