School Service

Lunch Bunch

Our council created, organized, and planned recreation games for our freshmen class during their lunch hour. We split up in committees for volleyball, dodgeball and basketball games. Each committee was responsible for organizing teams, game schedules and had to ref the games. It was a great way to create a positive school atmosphere and be of service to the school. We started this in January but had to stop due to our school closing.

Our council has done many projects to help children in our community. We have gone to our local elementary schools and helped student in various ways; reading to the and have them reed to us, help with arts and crafts, help with fun runs, turkey trots, kite flying days and play days. We made tie blankets for children and donated them to our local Child Haven. We made truffula tree bookmarks and positive message bookmarks for children to promote reading. We made jump ropes out of recycled plastic bags to give to needy children to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. We sent some to Haiti also. We help with our special needs children with various activities during the school year. These are just a few of the many ways our council promotes and participates in community and school service.

GOALS

1. To provide positive student and staff relations at AHS.

2. To provide an avenue of service that would benefit the community in positive manner.

3. To promote and provide a positive and safe learning environment for students.

4. To educate the community about intervention, reporting and helping others.

After the tragedy at our school, our council has helped promote the “Say Something” campaign at our school. We put up and sent flyers, gave information for students to download the app, and we continually send out positive messages. It is anonymous reporting system. It is a way for students to have a safe place to speak up about information that may be harmful to themselves or others. It has also helped with the healing process that some are still dealing with.

Freshmen Orientation is planned in May of the upcoming school year in conjunction with the student council and administrations of AHS and Koogler Middle School. Our student council is responsible for setting up tour groups, skits, inviting clubs and organizations to speak and encourage participation in “life” at Aztec High School. This year due to covid and our online learning environment our student council along with the counselors and administration welcomed our incoming freshmen in a google meet format. We discussed information to help guide and direct the freshmen and gave them valuable information to help them be successful. Aztec High School Freshman Orientation is a whole TEAM effort. Hosting the orientation is great way provide positive mentorship to the incoming freshmen.

We are planning an in-person campus tour as soon as we are able to return to campus.

1. To encourage participation by volunteering personal time for school service.

2. To provide mentorship with the incoming freshmen class.

3. To provide an avenue of service for Student Council that would benefit the most students and staff in a positive manner.

4. To provide positive student and staff relations at Aztec High School.

5. To promote and provide a positive and safe learning environment for students.

6. To help educate students about school safety and drug/alcohol awareness.

7. To develop leadership and communication skills.

Positive communication was the most important aspect of this project and everyone did a great job with their assigned task. This project ran smoothly with the help of the admin and counselors at AHS.

As part of the student council membership, it is the responsibility of the organization to hold local, district, state, summer, regional and national leadership conferences. These workshops are designed especially for student council members to gain valuable insight in to the leadership world. During these workshops, delegates are asked to present various workshops to their peers. Depending on the conference, there are nationally known speakers and presentations on various topics that relate to student council. At the conferences, the delegates get to share ideas, make know friends, network and take back to their schools valuable information to help make their schools better. These conferences are an excellent way to encourage membership into our student council organization.

* To promote council spirit.

* To provide an avenue of service for student council officers that would benefit them in a positive manner.

* To develop organization, leadership and responsibility skills.

* To show appreciation to council members.

* To develop positive relations within in our council and with others around the state and nation.

In a continued effort to improve and promote positive student and staff relations and school spirit, our student council provided each student and staff member with a birthday card. We have a birthday committee that obtains student and faculty names and birthdays. Each card is individualized with a special note from council members. Pre-covid our student council spends around two hours each month folding cards and signing each one. The cards are then delivered to the office by student council officers and given to classmates and staff. If we have funds we purchase Little Debbie’s cakes and give them out also. We purchase cardstock and print our own cards. Since covid we try to send an emailed birthday card. This seems like a trivial project but everyone seems to like it. It may make someone’s day.

  • To promote council and school spirit.
  • To provide positive student/staff relations at Aztec High School.
  • To provide an avenue of service for Student Council Officers that would benefit the most students and staff in a positive manner.
  • To develop organization and responsibility skills.

Obtaining funds for the Little Debbie’s – obtaining a PO is a long process and we have to plan two weeks ahead – pre-covid. Now we send an email because we can’t afford to mail them. It isn’t as personal as before but it works.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Our student council hosted a pumpkin decorating competition as a motivation project. Coach Strauss delivered a small pumpkin to each council member’s house since we were on lock down. We were given 4 days to decorate our pumpkins and then had to submit a picture of our pumpkin with the name and its leadership message and quality. Everyone was provided instructions – we could draw, paint, glue on our pumpkins (not carve). If anyone wanted to do something extra they had to get permission or if we need supplies Coach Strauss provided them for us. We had 3 categories – Coolest of the Cool, Most Creative, and Best Use of Recycled Items. This was a great team building and bonding activity that encouraged old members as well as welcome new member to the council – we shared our creations on a google slideshow and voted on the winners.

GOALS

  • To promote council spirit.
  • To provide motivation that is vital to a student council leader.
  • To develop leadership, organizational and time management skills for council members.
  • To provide an avenue of service for Student Council that would benefit the most students, staff and community members in a positive manner.

The leadership in our country and the whole world has to work with one another to be successful. This is similar in a carousel, in order for it to spin everything has to work properly.

Pumpkin Spice

&

Everything Nice

My pumpkin relates to leadership because to be a leader you have to be sweet and kind otherwise no one will follow you and look up to you as a role model. My pumpkin is a sweet pumpkin spice Latte so it tells you to always stay sweet to everyone.

These are the winners of our contest! Each contestant had to give a leadership message that went with their creative pumpkin design.

  • To encourage participation and fundraising means to help promote the various classes at AHS.
  • To provide an avenue of service and fundraising for AHS clubs and organizations.

Goals for this project were met.

We are fortunate that we have people who still donated even though we had to social distance and were not in school. ☺

Penny Wednesday’s

This project is a great way to give to the families of our school and community in their time of need. Our student council sponsors a “Penny Wednesday” whenever it is needed to help the families of our school and community. Many needs constitute a penny drive; death in the family, accidents, fire, and hospital bills, etc. When our school is in session, student council officers go to fourth and fifth hour classes to get donations of change and cash. After all money is collected, our advisor cashes the money at a local bank. We then give the money in a card to the family or deposit the money in an account if needed. This past year we helped set up Go Fund Me accounts for a students who had medical needs and a house fire. We set up an account at the bank so people could donate due to social distancing.

Our council has is very passionate about our project – “The world wouldn’t spin the same without You” – Aztec Tigers Mental Health Awareness. Our athletic trainer helped us spearhead this project. He got us in touch with DAY 1 Ambition. The project really promotes bringing mental health to the forefront of life and tackling subjects like depression, anxiety, and suicide head on. We had one of our own students commit suicide in the aftermath of our school shooting and have had numerous mental health/suicidal issues since being out of school. The owner of the company designed t-shirts and hoodies with our school colors - see the message below. We sent out flyers via email, social media, google class room, so students and community members could order shirts to help promote awareness. He gave a 5$ kickback to the school - community for each shirt sold. We are planning a school wide assembly in March/April with Day 1 Ambition. This is one of the many ways our council promotes and participates in the state service project – BE WELL.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters – Everyone has one or knows someone who has worn one! We held our Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest before the holiday break. Everyone was encouraged to find a sweater – beg for one, buy one, borrow one from grandma, or make their own. We made a flyer with a teacher and student sporting an ugly seater and shared them to our school community to encourage participation. Everyone who participated was asked to submit their photo online and we voted on the winners. We had three categories for them to compete in – Most Creative, Coolest of the Cool, and Best Use of Recycled Items. Gift certificates were donated from local businesses to help support the event and were mailed to the winners. This was a fun project that we planned and it is an annual event – but with a virtual effect this year.

1. To promote school spirit

2. To provide positive student/staff./community relations at Aztec High School.

3. To encourage brainstorming ideas among staff and students.

4. To develop leadership and communication skills.

5. To provide positive student and community relations and service.

Goals

Get to Green Project

  • To promote school and community spirit.
  • To encourage participation by volunteering personal time for school community service.
  • To encourage participation in Aztec High School clubs and organizations.
  • To provide an avenue of service for AHS clubs, organizations and student body.

Our council is working on a project called – Get to Green. We are making student videos and flyers to share with our school, community, county and state to help get our state to green so we can get back to our campuses. These are some of the talking points for the scripts and what we are putting in our videos. They are being shared on social media, tv, and radio. This a project that we are working diligently on to help raise community awareness to help get our county to green.

*Our goal is green -Protect our people.

*Remain steadfast in your commitment to protecting our community

*We must stay the course and continue incorporating COVID safe practices into our daily routines to protect our people.

*San Juan County’s Goal is Green.

*Across the organization, we are keeping COVID-safe practices at the forefront of our routine to Protect our People.

*By reducing cases of COVID-19 in San Juan County, we can be on track to reduce restrictions, protect our medical providers and services, return students to the classroom, and protect our most vulnerable populations.

*Talking to parents and students. Parents are struggling to balance homeschooling and work. Students miss sports, extracurricular activities, friends, time-honored traditions (homecoming, prom, graduation, etc.)

It has been hard not being in person but we are working hard virtually to make this happen. We want to be back in school.

EXAMPLE What’s important to you? Is it seeing our restaurants and retailers busier? Is it visiting your grandparent in a nursing home? Or maybe it's getting our kids back to school and playing sports. Perhaps it’s all of the above. We can safely say, EVERYONE wants to help out our medical community because we all need care at some point.

Whatever motivates you to Protect Our People — keep it in the forefront of your daily routine. Let’s Get to Green!

TALKING POINTS

  • Our goal is green
  • Protect our people
  • Remain steadfast in your commitment to protecting our community
  • We must stay the course and continue incorporating COVID safe practices into our daily routines to protect our people.
  • San Juan County’s Goal is Green. Across the organization, we are keeping COVID-safe practices at the forefront of our routine to Protect our People. By reducing cases of COVID-19 in San Juan County, we can be on track to reduce restrictions, protect our medical providers and services, return students to the classroom, and protect our most vulnerable populations.

NOTES

When creating your scripts, think about your audiences and what would resonate with them:

Schools:

Talking to parents and students. Parents are struggling to balance homeschooling and work. Students miss sports, extracurricular activities, friends, time-honored traditions (homecoming, prom, graduation, etc.)

Heathcare Workers:

Everyone is a patient at some point. Have to protect our healthcare system so it’s there when it’s needed.

Long-term Care Facilities:

Talking to loved ones who want to see their parents, grandparents, etc.

First Responders:

Similar to healthcare workers. We’re on the frontline protecting our community. Please help protect us so we’re there when you need us most.

Small Businesses:

Our small businesses help the community throughout the year: donate to nonprofits, school sports, youth programs. It’s time for us to help them by staying the course and getting us to green.

Give our businesses a chance to survive, continue incorporating COVID safe practice into your daily routine so we can get to green.
