Welcome to AP Physics 1
Physics studies questions related to matter and energy, and utilizes mathematics to predict the behavior of matter and energy. AP physics is meant to match an introductory semester long college course. The AP curriculum is based on standards set forth by the College Board. This course is an algebra based, instead of calculus, course that would align to a first semester college course.
Units Covered:
1D Kinematics, 2D Kinematics, Dynamics, Conservation of Energy, Conservation of Momentum, Uniform Circular Motion, Rotational Motion, Oscillations & Waves, Fluids.
Textbooks:
Physics. James S. Walker - 4th Edition & College Physics 2e for AP Courses
Classroom Expectations:
*All school rules and policies in the Student Handbook apply.
Grading Procedures:
A total points system is used to calculate grades. Grades are determined by dividing an individual student’s accumulated point total by the total number of points possible.
Tests …………………………..……………. 100pts*
Quizzes ………………………………….…. 50pts Max
Labs …………………………………….….. 50pts Max
Homework ………………………………… Pts Vary
Projects …………………………………… Pts Vary
*(50% MC/50% SA)
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F Below 60
Homework: Assignments will be posted in Schoology. There will be times where we submit on Schoology and turn in by hand in class. Pay attention to directions.
HELPFUL ONLINE SITES
PowerSchool is an excellent way to stay on top of your grades, tardies, and absences:https://ps1.morton709.org/public/home.html
Schoology is where students AND parents access content, assignments, announcements and resources: http://mcusd709.schoology.com
Supplies Needed:
Other Recommended Supplies:
Academic Assistance
M-F: 7:25am-7:50am
M-Th: 3:00pm – 3:40pm
Prep Periods: 3rd & 4th
Students must ask by appointment for assistance via email or during class, to get help during Homeroom. Students need to be proactive so that they can get help when they need it. If need to meet during Cherry Homeroom we can arrange that once a week.
Absent/Late Work:
Schoology will be updated weekly. You have full access to lab presentations and notes. Please check Schoology to see what you missed. Most assignments are digital but some are physical handouts.
Labs and quizzes must be made-up prior to the last day of the unit. LATE WORK: 80% deduction/assignment after collection in class or time due digitally on Schoology.
Late work can be submitted up until the end of each quarter. A “0” in the gradebook for a missing assignment will be changed WHEN it is submitted.
CLASSROOM NORMS FOR TECHNOLOGY
Students will save/turn in work as needed and completely put away iPads when directed to do so. Many labs and assignments require students to digitally share data, so shared documents should be edited carefully to avoid lose of data.
Students will follow along digitally during activity explanations and use Schoology links to external simulations as instructed by the teacher.
PHONES WILL BE SILENT AND PUT AWAY UNLESS GIVEN PERMISSION.
We will be using a college-level textbook, and the rigor of the course will subsequently be higher than a typical high school physics course. Despite the fact that most students who are looking to major in engineering or physical science will be required to take a calculus-based course, this class should lay the framework for success in future courses.
Due to the rigor and depth of this course, there may be times when you will be asked to cover material on your own to prepare for a subsequent lesson or concept. If you have questions though, never hesitate to ask or request additional supportive supplemental materials. Students' success will be easier if you appreciate that this course will be taught at the college level and will in general require 1-2 hours of study time per class period. Students who are not prepared to invest this effort and time commitment are urged not to enroll in AP Physics.
The Road to Success
The best way to succeed in AP Physics 1 is to ask questions, participate fully, take notes, attend class, and complete assignments. I also additionally feel that reading assigned text is vital to your success. Extra credit opportunities will occasionally be available. If you need help, please ask.
