The promise of Jesus’ return

• As we have seen, Jesus is God’s promised Messiah or Christ – His anointed king
• Jesus did not immediately bring God’s Kingdom (see Luke 24:21; Acts 1:6)
• Instead, Jesus said that he would return, coming again in glory

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.

Matthew 16:27–28, NIV

• When Jesus was taken into heaven after his resurrection, his followers were promised that he would return in the same way (Acts 1:11)
• As we saw in lesson 4, when Jesus returns, those who have died ‘in Christ’ will also be raised and given everlasting life (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18)

God’s purpose in history

• Ever since sin entered the world, God has been working to put things right
• Daniel 2 records a dream of the Babylonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar
• God showed through this dream that He is at work through successive world powers to bring His Kingdom
• Head of gold = Babylonian Empire
• Chest and arms of silver = Medo-Persian Empire
• Belly and thighs of brass = Greek Empire
• Legs of iron = Roman Empire
• Feet of iron and clay = Mixed kingdoms
• At the end of the dream, a rock strikes the statue, destroys it, and fills the whole earth

In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands.

The Kingdom of God on earth (1)

• Other Old Testament prophets like Isaiah give us pictures of what the Kingdom of God will be like

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the cobra’s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

Isaiah 11:6–9, NIV

• Isaiah also speaks of God’s word going out from Jerusalem, and peace for all nations

The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war any more.

• Jesus taught his disciples to pray for God’s Kingdom on earth

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

• Paul says we are awaiting our Saviour to come to earth from heaven

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Philippians 3:20–21, NIV

• The book of Revelation echoes the message of Daniel – God’s Kingdom will replace all human kingdoms

The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.

Revelation 11:15, NIV

The Kingdom of God on earth (3)

• The Bible speaks about the establishment of God’s Kingdom as a process:
• Jesus must reign until all other human power – and finally death itself – is ended (1 Corinthians 15:25–26)
• Those who have been given immortal life will reign with him – Revelation refers to a period of a thousand years (a ‘millennium’) (2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 20:4–6)
• The nations will walk in the light of the Lord (Revelation 22:1–5) and receive God’s word from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:1–5)
• Revelation 20:11–15 indicates there will be a second, final judgement of these people
• Finally, Jesus will ‘hand over the kingdom’ to his Father, and God will be ‘all in all’ (1 Corinthians 15:24, 28)
• As we have seen from Isaiah, God’s final purpose is that the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of His glory (see Habakkuk 2:14; Psalm 72:19)

Signs of Jesus’ coming

• Jesus told his disciples that no-one – not even he – knows the time of his coming (Matthew 24:36; Acts 1:7)
• But before his death, Jesus spoke about his return in the ‘Olivet Prophecy’:
• This teaching was given on the Mount of Olives, just outside Jerusalem
• Found in Mark 13, Matthew 24, Luke 21
• Partly about the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple by the Romans (this happened in AD 70)
• Also speaks about a time of great distress in the world before Jesus’ return

There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

The witness of the nation of Israel

• The people of Israel were chosen as God’s witnesses – even though they were sometimes spiritually ‘blind’ and ‘deaf’ (Isaiah 43:8–13)
• They were exiled from their land and scattered among other nations, but God promised to regather them (see Ezekiel 37:1–14)
• The survival of the Jewish people, and the establishment of the state of Israel, are further signs that God is still working out His purpose in history
• The people of Israel are witnesses to God’s everlasting love and mercy

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.

Jesus the righteous judge

• When Jesus returns, he will judge the world with justice (see 2 Timothy 4:1)

• Jesus taught that the judgement will lead to two outcomes

A time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out – those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.

• As long as we keep trusting in Jesus, and try to follow him, we do not need to fear judgement

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

Being ready for Jesus’ coming

• Although we do not know the time of Jesus’ return, Jesus told many parables to teach us to be ready and waiting, for example:
• Parable of the ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom (Matthew 25:1–13)
• Parable of the nobleman who went to a distant country to be made king and then return (Luke 19:11–27)
• Parable of the master’s servants, keeping watch for his return (Luke 12:35–40)
• Jesus said that we should not worry about things in this life, but seek first God’s Kingdom

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ …But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

آماده شدن برای آمدن عیسی

• Jesus taught about the characteristics of those who will be in God’s Kingdom

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
