With 3.5, we’ve added a native integration with PowerProtect DD appliances

you can now back up PowerStore BLOCK VOLUMES and VOLUME GROUPS directly to PowerProtect, with no dedicated backup server required, and zero impact to your application hosts.
DDBoost built into the PowerStore OS
PowerProtect appliance can be either physical or virtual, and connectivity is via IP using the Replication tagged ports on the PowerStore system
Connectivity from PS to PPDM is via IP, host connectivity can be via FC, iSCSI or either NVMe protocol.

With this integration, PowerStore customers have a very cost-effective way to take advantage of PowerProtect, the industry’s #1 data protection appliance.

Backups are very efficient – only changes are sent across the wire – uses snapshot to track changes between backups so only changed 4K blocks are sent

Backs up volumes and volume groups (VGs) via an incremental-forever methodology

After the initial backup only differentials from previous backup need to be moved

Backups can be orchestrated from either PowerProtect Data Manager, which is aimed at Data Protection Admins – OR PowerStore Manager, which is primarily targeted for use by Storage Administrators.

PowerStore’s native integration with PowerProtect appliances streamlines backup and recovery operations directly in PowerStore Manager. Setting up the workflow to your PowerProtect appliance can be done in just 90 seconds, enabling administrators to offload backups to either physical, virtual or cloud-based targets. The entire workflow can be driven directly through PowerStore manager.

Create backup sessions a new remote protection rule which is part of a protection policy.

Storage Direct Workflow:

PowerProtect Data Manager requests backup of block volumes and volume groups.
PowerStore uses a bit map of storage to determine changed blocks, deduplicates with DDBoost, and writes directly to a volume on the PowerProtect DD; Retention Lock is applied on PowerProtect DD. PowerStore snapshots can also be managed.
Volumes are available for instant access or differential recovery to PowerStore

Storage Direct Benefits:

Highest performance backup with block bit map delta and differential block level backup; incremental forever; data mover runs on PS.
Fastest possible recovery with block level differential recovery from encapsulated (native) volume; volumes can also be mounted on DD for Instant Access.
Little to no impact to application and database during backup. Backups are crash-consistent with support for pre-post scripts planned for a future release.
PowerProtect Data Manager can be used to manage PowerStore snapshots.
